2001 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Start by removing twice the dust protectors while disconnecting the lead wire from the magnetic switch terminal after unstattering the nut at 5.9 N.m (60 kgf.cm, 52 in.lbf). Proceed by taking out the 2 through bolts that need 9.3 N.m (95 kgf.cm, 82 in.lbf) torque until the field frame with the armature separates from the magnetic assembly. Align the field frame protrusion with the magnetic switch groove. When assembling the field frame add a new O-ring instead of using the existing one. Unscrew two screws from the starter housing clutch assembly and gear while applying 9.3 N.m (95 kgf.cm, 82 in.lbf) of torque before disconnecting all components. Insert the return spring into the clutch shaft hole after applying grease to it. Put a magnetic finger on the clutch shaft hole to extract the steel ball while applying grease to both the ball and hole. Disassemble the brush holder by taking out its two screwed screws with O-ring from the field frame while maintaining a torque of 3.8 N.m (39 kgf.cm, 34 in.lbf). Then remove the O-ring and replace it with a new one during assembly. Check the positive lead wire insulation after disassembling brush leads from the holder while using a screwdriver to keep the spring back. Assemble the equipment in the opposite direction while adding high-temperature grease both to the bearing and gears. Use Special Service Tool 09286-46011 as well as Special Service Tool 09820-00030 and an appropriate press to exchange and install new rear bearings while using the same tool to press in new front bearings. Begin the magnetic switch end cover removal by taking out 3 bolts and the gasket followed by the plunger until you can inspect the contact plate for wear which must not exceed 0.9 mm depth (0.035 in.). Use Special Service Tool: 09810-38140 on Terminal C and Terminal 30 to loosen their nuts then take out the terminal parts in a sequence of correct order and direction before installing temporary replacement parts. To ensure correct gauge pressure calculations apply the hand press ram diameter in combination with a wooden block to produce 981 N (100 kgf, 221 lbf) force that presses down on the contact plate. Clean contact surfaces between the contact plate and plunger then attach the magnetic switch end cover with plunger and new gasket and end cover and lead clamp while tightening bolts to 3.6 N.m (37 kgf.cm, 32 in.lbf).
