2002 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2002 Toyota Corolla?
A: A power steering pump service and repair begins with uninstalling the 4 bolts and 2 screws that attach the RH engine under cover. The drive belt tension can be reduced by rotating the drive belt tensioner arm clockwise while removing the drive belt. The suction hose requires detachment by means of clip removal while preventing fluid from dripping onto the drive belt. You should disconnect the connector first before you remove the oil pressure switch while preventing it from dropping to the floor and conduct a replacement if it shows damage. The pressure feed tube needs its union bolt along with gasket removed to disconnect it. Stop the vane pump pulley from rotation using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to loosen the nut for removal of the pulley alongside the vane pump shaft. The PS vane pump assembly requires the removal of its 2 pump assembly set bolts and nuts to be extracted from its position. To reassemble the PS vane pump assembly put it into position using the two set bolts and nuts then tighten them to 37 Nm (370 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.). Install the vane pump pulley and attach a new nut through the use of the Special Service Tool to prevent rotation before torquing the nut to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Place a new gasket on the installation site and fasten the pressure feed tube using a union bolt while making sure the stopper meets Pressure Feed No. 2 before tightening the bolt to 54 Nm (550 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.). Affix the oil pressure switch using 21 Nm torque measure (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) while taking precautions against oil contamination of the connector. Connect the suction hose with its clip and loosen the drive belt tension to reinstall it before installing the RH engine under cover by attaching the 4 bolts and 2 screws. Bleeding the power steering system marks the concluding procedure of this process.
