Toyota Corolla Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on Toyota Corolla?
    A:
Start the power steering pump service and repair by first removing the front wheel RH together with draining all power steering fluid. Begin the process by taking out the engine under cover RH followed by removing the fan and generator V belt that applies to both 1ZZ-FE and 2ZZ-GE engine models. Remove the clip on the oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 before using Special Service Tool: 09023-12901 to detach the pressure feed tube assembly through the removal of its bolt which disconnects the pressure feed tube clamp. We can remove the vane pump bracket rear when we take out its bolt before disconnecting the Oil Pressure Switch connector and removing the 2 bolts combined with 2 nuts to extract the vane pump assembly. The vane pump assembly should rest in a vise equipped with Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132) to remove the power steering suction port union through bolt removal as well as O-ring removal. Begin flow control valve removal by taking out both pressure port union and its O-ring then the flow control valve with compression spring. The replacement of the damaged oil pressure switch is necessary. You can remove the vane pump housing rear by first removing 4 bolts and the O-ring so you can extract the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly with the help of two screwdrivers to detach its snap ring. After removing the 10 vane pump plates, vane pump rotor, vane pump cam ring and the front side plate users must extract O-rings from both components. A screwdriver will remove the housing oil seal with caution while maintaining the undamaged state of the housing front. A vane pump assembly replacement becomes necessary if the vane pump shaft and bush in the housing front exceed 0.043 mm (0.0017 inch) clearance. Check the vane pump plates thickness that should fall between 1.405 to 1.411 mm (0.0553 to 0.0556 inch) while verifying the vane pump rotor groove clearance with vane plates is less than 0.025 mm (0.0010 inch). Apply power steering fluid on the flow control valve before insertion into its opening; failure to fall properly requires replacement of the vane pump assembly. The vane pump assembly requires replacement if you detect any air flowing out of the end holes after applying compressed air to the flow control valve. Check the length of the compression spring measuring at least 36.9 mm (1.453 inch) before declaring the vane pump assembly as defective if the measurement falls below specification. Check the pressure port union for fluid leakage potential because damage may exist therefore vane pump assembly replacement might be needed. The release of power steering fluid on the new housing oil seal lip should be performed before installation using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a press. The w/pulley shaft sub-assembly needs to be inserted into position while avoiding damage to the housing oil seal lip. Fasten the front side plate while applying power steering fluid to O-rings before positioning the dents correctly. Place the vane pump cam ring with its inscribed side facing up and then add the vane pump rotor without direction specifications before treating all 10 vane pump plates with power steering fluid and placing them with the round ends outside. You should install the new snap ring to the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly before putting on the vane pump housing rear combined with a new O-ring coated in power steering fluid while ensuring straight pin alignment matches the dents and clamping down with 4 bolts at 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Both smooth pump operation with reduced noise and the check of the specified service bolt should occur before testing the pulley rotating torque which should remain below 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.). The vane pump assembly requires installation of the oil pressure switch with 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.) torque before applying power steering fluid to coat the compression spring and flow control valve. These elements go on with a new O-ring while securing the pressure port union with a torque of 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). Power steering fluid needs to coat a new O-ring before installation at the power steering suction port union using a bolt secured at 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Secure the vane pump assembly through two bolts and nuts to achieve 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.) torque while connecting the oil pressure switch connector without let any oil contact its surface. The position of vane pump bracket rear requires a bolt torque of 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.) before attaching the pressure feed tube assembly through Special Service Tool: 09023-12901 at 41 Nm (418 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.). Inspect torque wrench usage during this installation step. To finalize the installation process the mechanic will first apply 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.) torque to the pressure feed tube clamp before proceeding to connect the oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 and assembly the fan and generator V belts for both engine types and add power steering fluid followed by system bleeding and leak inspection and then reinstallation of the engine under cover RH and front wheel RH at 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.).
  • Q: How to install the Power Steering Pump on Toyota Corolla?
    A:
The installation process of the power steering vane pump starts with applying power steering fluid to the indicated parts. The vane pump assembly should be mounted with 2 bolts and nuts which require a torque of 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf) while connecting the oil pressure switch connector without any oil residue. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-12901 to connect the pressure feed tube assembly which requires a measurement of 41 Nm (418 kgf-cm, 30 ft-lbf) and employs a torque wrench with 345 mm (13.58 in.) fulcrum for precision before ensuring the tool aligns smoothly with the wrench. Fasten the pressure feed tube clamp with a bolt which requires 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 in-lbf) torque. The oil reservoir gets connected to pump hose No. 1 by a clip before installing the V belt between the fan and generator. After fluid addition to the power steering system the technician bleeds the system before conducting a fluid leak inspection. Under cover RH and the front wheel RH go under installation underneath the engine while torquing them to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf).
