    Q:
How to overhaul the power steering pump on Toyota Matrix? Posted by Customer
    A:
The power steering pump overhaul process starts with removing the front wheel on the right-hand side followed by draining power steering fluid and then removing the engine under cover located on the right-hand side. Begin by removing the fan and generator V belt and then disconnect the oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 by unclipping it. Special Service Tool: 09023-38400 allows you to disconnect the pressure feed tube assembly for bolt removal that enables pressure feed tube clamp disconnection. The procedure involves disconnecting the oil pressure switch connector while unscrewing the 2 bolts and nuts to remove the vane pump assembly. Before moving to the vane pump bracket rear detach bolt you must remove the power steering pump heat insulator (4WD drive type). Place the vane pump assembly into a vise fitted with Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132) to remove the power steering suction port union through unbolting with removal of its integrated O-ring. Start by removing the pressure port union with its attached O-ring followed by extracting the flow control valve together with the compression spring. Gas handling of the oil pressure switch requires caution because you might need to replace it altogether. The detachment of the vane pump housing rear requires removing its O-ring along with the 4 bolts. The snap ring should be removed with a screwdriver before proceeding to take out the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly. Proceed to remove 10 vane plates and vane pump rotor before extracting the vane pump cam ring and front side plate while discarding the O-rings. Technician should use Special Service Tool: 09631-10030 along with a hammer device to extract the vane pump housing oil seal while maintaining the pump housing integrity. The clearance inspection process requires a micrometer and caliper gauge to measure the standard and maximum figures. Exceeding the maximum level requires the installation of a new vane pump assembly. Check and replace the vane pump assembly when measurement results for vane plate height, thickness, or length or vane plate to rotor groove clearance fall below technical specifications. Power steering fluid should coat the flow control valve before inspecting its smooth operation and detecting any leakage while replacing it when necessary. You should change the flow control valve compression spring assembly together with its measurement because the free length falls below the minimum requirement. Testing of the pressure port union must be done to identify damaged sections so replacement becomes necessary. Mount a new vane pump housing oil seal by applying power steering fluid to the lip while using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-7100) and a press to achieve correct orientation. The vane pump shaft should arrive at the vane pump housing front gradually as technicians lubricate its inside bushing surface with power steering fluid to prevent oil seal lip damage. Place the front side plate along with the O-rings before adding the cam ring with its inscribed mark in the outward position. After coating the vane plates with power steering fluid, mount them into the vane pump rotor but position them outward with the round end. Install a new snap ring onto the pulley shaft sub-assembly through a snap ring expander device while the pump housing rear requires a new O-ring which should receive power steering fluid coating before proper alignment to the straight pin using 4 bolts tightened to 22 Nm (220 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). After checking that the pump rotates smoothly you should install a maintenance bolt of 50 mm (1.9685 inch) length and 10 mm (0.3937 inch) diameter with 1.25 mm (0.0492 inch) pitch. Measure the rotating torque at 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 ft. lbs.) or less. The power steering oil pressure switch installation requires a new O-ring coated with power steering fluid before tightening it to 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.). The service begins with coating the flow control valve compression spring and flow control valve in power steering fluid before their installation. A fresh O-ring receives a fluid coat before it is installed to the pressure port union which needs to be tightened at 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). Fasten the power steering suction port union to the chassis using a new O-ring and torque it to 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Previously coat the power steering pump heat insulator (4WD drive type) and the vane pump bracket rear with a bolt at 37 Nm (380 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.). The vane pump assembly requires two bolts and nuts that should be tightened to 37 Nm (380 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.). Afterward, reattach the oil pressure switch connector with no oil residue on its surface. Special Service Tool: 09023-38400 enables the pressure feed tube assembly connection with a torque of 41 Nm (420 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.) while the pressure feed tube clamp bolt requires 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 ft. lbs.). Reattach the oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 using its clip before installing the fan and generator V belt as well as the front wheel RH at 103 Nm torque. Add power steering fluid then perform a system bleeding along with inspecting for fluid leaks before reinstalling the right-hand engine under cover.
