2002 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the parking brake shoe on 2002 Toyota Celica?
A: Start the parking brake shoe service and repair process by disassembling the rear wheel and tightening it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The next step involves removing the rear disc brake assembly through the separation of its 2 installation bolts combined with a rear brake caliper torque of 47 Nm (475 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.) while keeping an eye on preserving the flexible hose. Securely suspend and position the disc brake while checking that no strain affects the hose before releasing the parking brake lever to extract the disc. The disc will free up after readjusting the shoe when the wheel moves without resistance. Through the use of needle-nose pliers extract the 2 shoe return springs along with the tension spring and the shoe strut itself. You need Special Service Tool: 09718-00010 to detach the shoe hold-down spring and pin and afterward take out the front shoe and adjuster. The procedure should be repeated for the rear shoe by means of the same special tool which removes the hold-down spring and pin and dislodges the rear shoe from the parking brake shoe lever for complete removal. Discard the parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever through the assistance of needle-nose pliers. Brake shoe examinations must check for wear and rust or damage to all disassembled parts; brake lining thickness must be measured with a ruler where standard thickness equals 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) and minimum thickness equals 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Shoe replacement is required for any lining measurements reaching or going below minimum thickness or showing severe uneven wear patterns. A disc inside diameter measurement using a brake drum gauge requires a standard of 173.0 mm (6.811 inch) and maximum of 174.0 mm (6.850 inch). Get a new disc or grind it if measurement exceeds the maximum standard or shows uneven or scorched wear. The contact condition between parking brake lining and disc can be checked by grinding the shoe lining to fit using a brake shoe grinder after applying chalk to the inside disc surface while repair of improper contact requires replacement of the brake shoe assembly. Operate in the reverse order while applying high-temperature grease to specified components and use the adjuster to adjust parking brake shoe clearance by first inserting hub nuts and removing the hole plug before expanding the shoes until disc locking happens then retracting the adjuster 8 notches before reinstalling the hole plug. Use a secure dry road at 31 mph (50 km/h) to run the vehicle while pushing the parking brake release button and pulling on the lever with 10 kgf (98 N / 19.8 ft. lbs.) force for 400 meters (0.25 mile) two to three times. Perform a check to modify parking brake lever extendability when needed.
