    Q:
How to service and repair the parking brake shoe on Toyota Celica? Posted by Customer
    A:
Service and repair operations on parking brake shoes must start with removing the rear wheel while achieving a torque level of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Remove the disc brake assembly from its rear position after extracting its two bolts and brake caliper with a torque of 47 Nm (475kgf-cm, 34ft-lbs) and avoiding flexible hose detachment. It is essential to suspend the disc brake while maintaining a safe distance from the flexible hose then release the parking brake lever to remove the disc. The skid shoe needs adjustment until the wheel rotates freely. As the next step you must employ needle-nose pliers to detach both shoe return springs along with the tension spring and subsequently the shoe strut. To remove the front shoe along with its adjuster you need Special Service Tool: 09718-00010 to disconnect the shoe hold-down spring and pin then take out both components. The same process should also be performed on the rear shoe by removing it from the parking brake shoe lever. The brake shoe lining thickness needs evaluation using a ruler to determine replacement (standard 2.0 mm, minimum 1.0 mm) before replacing any parts with wear, rust or damage. To assess the disc's quality you should use a brake drum gauge which should measure 173.0 mm to 174.0 mm maximum but the disc should be replaced or the worn areas should be ground. The contact quality between parking brake lining and disc can be checked using chalk and the lining must be ground appropriately. The adjustment process begins by applying high-temperature grease to specified parts then expands the shoes until the disc locks by moving the adjuster 8 notches before reinserting the hole plug. Settlement of parking brake parts becomes possible by driving at 50 km/h (31 mph) then maintaining constant force of 98 N (10 kgf, 19.8 lbs.) on the lever throughout 400 meters (0.25 mile) of driving. Complete this procedure 2-3 times before checking and adjusting the parking brake lever travel.
