2002 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Timing Cover or Timing Chain Case Oil Seal on 2002 Toyota Camry?
A: One must start the replacement process of the Timing Gear Case and Timing Chain Case Oil Seal by disassembling the front wheel RH followed by the front fender apron seal RH, engine cover sub-assembly No. 1 and engine moving control rod with bracket through bolt removal. The following replacement sequence involves the steps of removing engine mounting stay No. 2 RH and engine mounting bracket No. 2 RH followed by fan and generator V belt removal with Special Service Tool: 09249-63010. Lay out the crankshaft pulley; for TMC models apply Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 for bolt loosening while Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) does the removal work. When working on TMMK models you need Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to loosen the bolt and Special Service Tool: Cut off the oil seal lip with a knife followed by screwdriver prying to remove it while checking the crankshaft for damage which requires sandpaper (#400) mending when present. Professional Service Tool: 09223-22010 and a hammer help install the new oil seal properly after applying MP grease to the lip and cleaning away foreign substances before tapping it to reach the same level as the rear oil seal retainer edge while wiping off additional grease from the crankshaft. The reinstall process of the crankshaft pulley requires key alignment with the key groove; TMC models must use Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to torque the pulley bolt to 170 Nm (1,733 kgf-cm, 125 ft. lbs.), while TMMK models need Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to achieve the same torque. Proceed by using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to install the fan and generator V belt before tightening the engine mounting bracket No. 2 RH to 52 Nm (531 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.) and the engine mounting stay No. 2 RH to 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.). Begin by installing the engine moving control rod with bracket through three bolts and torque them to 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.). Afterwards, install the front wheel RH with 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque. Finally, inspect for oil leaks.
