2002 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2002 Toyota Camry?
A: Begin camshaft replacement by taking away the front wheel RH followed by the front fender apron seal RH and engine cover sub-assembly No. 1 and ignition coil assembly and disconnecting ventilation hoses and engine wire. The engine wire harness clamp must be detached before removing the bolts and 2 nuts and extracting the cylinder head cover sub-assembly with its gasket. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC using the crankshaft pulley until it lines up with "0" and verify that bearing caps match the camshaft timing sprocket timing marks. First place matchmarks on the camshaft timing sprocket and timing chain then use a set of tools to disconnect chain tensioner assembly No. 1 by removing its 2 nuts, timing chain tensioner, and gasket and maintain the crankshaft from rotating during this task. The procedure for removing No. 2 camshaft involves fixing the camshaft with a wrench before loosening the camshaft timing gear set bolt followed by careful removal of the camshaft bearing cap bolts in their designated order. The camshaft requires elevation to extract both the timing gear set bolt and camshaft timing gear off the camshaft and timing chain. Begin by untightening all bearing cap bolts according to the specified order and then extract the intake camshaft and secure the timing chain with a string to avoid falling parts reaching the timing chain cover. To inspect the camshaft timing gear assembly maintain the No.1 camshaft in a particular vise position while wrapping oil paths with vinyl tape before applying air pressure to the oil path for counterclockwise camshaft timing gear assembly rotation. The fringe bolt of the camshaft timing gear assembly must be removed but all other 4 bolts should stay intact. The fractal end of the camshaft timing gear assembly must match precisely with the camshaft without clearance between parts before fastening the bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the timing chain on the camshaft timing gear by aligning the painted marks to the timing signs before torquing the specified bolts according to bearing caps No. 1 and No. 3 order. The painted links of the chain should align with the timing mark during No. 2 camshaft chain installation followed by set bolt temporary tightening and complete bolt tightening in specified order. Secure the camshaft by tightening the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.) and avoid damaging the valve lifter. Examine the match marks on the timing chain and camshaft timing sprockets together with the alignment of the pulley groove towards the timing mark of the chain cover. After releasing the ratchet pawl of chain tensioner assembly No. 1 insert the plunger while hooking it to the pin. Reinstall the assembly with a new gasket and tensioner using 2 nuts which require torque to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). After turning the crankshaft counterclockwise the operator disconnects the plunger knock pin from the hook while proceeding to turn the crankshaft clockwise to push the slipper with the plunger. The last installation step includes mounting the cylinder head cover sub-assembly by first deleting the old packing material then inserting Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent seal packing to specific locations before securing the cover with 8 bolts and 2 nuts at 11 Nm (110 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.). Reconnect the engine wire and install the ignition coil assembly to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) before reinstalling the front wheel RH with 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) while conducting and inspect for oil leaks.
