2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: Servicing and repairing power steering pumps requires first removing the front fender apron seal RH through the removal of its 2 bolts. The return hose requires removal of the clip while taking care that the fluid does not disrupt the drive belt operation. Move on to disconnect the pressure feed tube by first taking out the 2 clamp plate set nuts and then the bolt along with the 2 clamp plates and 2 holders. A spanner should be used to stabilize the pressure feed tube during its removal with Special Service Tool: 09023-12700. The operator should loosen bolt (A) and bolt (B) to detach the drive belt before disconnecting the oil pressure switch connector. Unscrew bolt A so the PS vane pump assembly can be removed but do not untighten bolt A completely followed by removal of bolt B and the pump assembly. The technician must remove the oil pressure switch while maintaining a new one if necessary and detach the pressure feed tube by removing the oil pressure switch from the union bolt followed by the bolt and gasket before removing the tube. Assemble the pressure feed tube with its gasket onto the PS vane pump using the union bolt where the stopper should rest against the front bracket and torque up to 52 Nm (530 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.). Install the oil pressure switch with torque at 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) while being cautious to avoid the oil seal attaching to the connector. The PS vane pump should be fit for preliminary installation using bolts A and B before drive belt tension control starts. Bolt A receives torques at 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) when using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 with a torque wrench set to 300 mm (11.81 inch) fulcrum length. Likewise, torque bolt B to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) after loosening the engine-wired clamp. Connect the oil pressure switch with the same torque wrench specifications when attaching the pressure feed tube using Special Service Tool: 09023-12700, maintaining tube stability while tightening it to 23 Nm (230 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Screw both clamp plates and holders onto the pressure feed tube using a bolt prior to installing its 2 clamp plates and nuts and torque these to 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.). The return hose requires clipping before installing the front fender apron seal RH along with its 2 bolts while performing a power steering system bleed.
