2001 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2001 Toyota Avalon?
A: Service and repair of the power steering pump starts with removing the front fender apron seal RH after unbolt its 2 fasteners. The next step involves removing the clip on the return hose because during the procedure avoid allowing fluid to drip onto the drive belt. The drainage process starts with separating the pressure feed tube using first the 2 clamp plate set nuts then the bolt and finally the 2 clamp plates and holders. Steadily maintain the pressure feed tube with a spanner before removing it using Special Service Tool: 09023-12700. Spin off bolts A and B until the drive belt becomes loose and disconnect the oil pressure switch connector. There is no full removal of bolt A but users must loosen it to extract the PS vane pump assembly. Bolt B then needs removal for complete extraction of the assembly. Start by removing the oil pressure switch with replacement if it gets damaged, then disconnect the pressure feed tube by disassembling the oil pressure switch from its union bolt and afterward taking out the gasket and tube itself. When installing the pressure feed tube and gasket to the PS vane pump assembly use the union bolt but make sure the stopper meets the front bracket then apply torque to 52 Nm (530 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.). After torquing the oil pressure switch to 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.), check that the oil seal does not stick to the connector during the procedure. Use Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to torque bolt A to 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) while adjusting the drive belt tension. The torque wrench must have a fulcrum length of 300 mm (11.81 inch) and you should release the clamp that contains the engine wire. Torque bolt B to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) before putting back the oil pressure switch connector. Attach pressure feed tube by using Special Service Tool: 09023-12700 to fasten it with a 23 Nm (230 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.) torque while complying with the torque wrench specifications. Install a bolt to attach both holders and clamp plates onto the pressure feed tube while using 2 nuts torqued to 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.). The return hose requires connection to the clip while installing the front fender apron seal RH through 2 bolts followed by power steering system bleeding steps.
