2002 Toyota Avalon Brake Master Cylinder Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Master Cylinder on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: Service and repair of the Brake Master Cylinder starts with removing the reservoir by unscrewing the set screw and pulling the reservoir out while torquing it to 1.7 Nm (17.5 kgf-cm, 15.2 inch lbs.) and continue with reservoir cap and strainer removal followed by grommet extraction. The service starts with removing the reservoir cap and strainer and then proceeding to extract the two grommets. Use a screwdriver to push the pistons inside completely when removing the piston stopper bolt from models without VSC because the target torque value is 10 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.). Push the piston in with a screwdriver after which you should use snap ring pliers to extract the snap ring but always extract the No. 1 piston and spring straight out to protect the cylinder bore. The task to remove the No. 2 piston requires a work table setup with a rag positioned 100 mm (3.94 inch) from the top of two wooden blocks. Lightly tap the cylinder flange against block edges until the piston drops out. Users should push the piston internally with a screwdriver to extract the straight pin through body rotation before pulling out both pistons alongside their springs in a straight direction. The installation of the No. 2 piston must face horizontally between the grooves. Search the cylinder bore for rust spots and scoring and examine it for damage and wear. If necessary clean and replace the cylinder. To rebuild components start by restoring the assembly sequence the opposite way of disassembly while applying lithium soap base glycol grease to rubber parts that bear arrows.
