2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Air Bag Sensor Assembly for the Column Shift on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: The service and repair process for the Column Shift Air Bag Sensor Assembly begins by taking out the Front Door Scuff Plate LH followed by Cowl Side Trim LH and moving on to No.1 Lower Panel and finally the No.2 Under Cover before completing with Lower Panel and Finish Panel. Start by disconnecting the Air Bag sensor connectors when the assembly remains in place followed by securing the Air Bag sensor assembly with three Torx wrench (T40, Part No.09042-00020 or locally manufactured tool) screws. The Torx wrench will be needed to secure the new Air Bag sensor assembly through three screws which require a torque setting of 20 N.m (205 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf). The Air Bag sensor connectors must be connected after properly installing the assembly. The sensor assembly must meet specification standards by being free from damage like cracks while SRS wire connections need to remain untangled from other components. The secure installation process calls for replacing the Finish Panel and Lower Panel followed by the No.2 Under Cover, No.1 Lower Panel and Cowl Side Trim LH and Front Door Scuff Plate LH in that order. Industrial environment demands new SRS components exclusively because any sensor assembly involved with Air Bag deployment must never be repaired or reintroduced into service.
