2001 Toyota Avalon Air Bag Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the side Air Bag sensor assembly on 2001 Toyota Avalon?
A: The repair and servicing of the side Air Bag sensor assembly starts by removing the rear seat cushion and the three elements of scuff plates along with the center pillar lower garnish. Begin by removing the retractor of the front seat outer belt while still leaving the side Air Bag sensor assembly intact before disconnecting the connector from it. The side Air Bag sensor assembly can be removed once you finish removing three security bolts. The SRS installation requires only new parts because vehicle parts obtained from another vehicle or sensors retrieved from collisions are prohibited. The side Air Bag assembly requires installation with three bolts at 20 N.m (205 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) torque and the connector installation must follow after the sensor assembly installation. Verify that the installed torque matches the specified values. The replacement of any sensor assembly should be done with a new component if you detect damage or have handled this assembly previously. The SRS wiring should avoid placing itself in the path of other components while maintaining clear from pinched areas. To check for assembly looseness shake the sensor when installation is complete. Install the retractor of the front seat outer belt with an upper bolt torque of 7.4 N.m (75 kgf.cm, 65 in.lbf) and a lower bolt torque of 41 N.m (420 kgf.cm, 30 ft.lbf). Then proceed with installing the center pillar lower garnish, front door scuff plate, rear door scuff plate, and finally, the rear seat cushion.
