2000 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Air Bag sensor assembly in a column shift vehicle on 2000 Toyota Avalon?
A: The column shift service process requires removal of FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH, COWL SIDE TRIM LH, NO.1 LOWER PANEL, NO.2 UNDER COVER, LOWER PANEL along with FINISH PANEL before proceeding with Air Bag sensor assembly removal by disconnecting connectors from their installed position. Disable the Air Bag system using a torx wrench (T40) which can be Part No.09042-00020 or a similar locally manufactured tool. Then remove the 4 screws that fasten the Air Bag sensor assembly. The torx wrench aids the installation where technicians need to fasten the Air Bag sensor assembly with 3 screws to 20 Nm (205 kg.cm, 15 ft.lb) torque as they link Air Bag sensor connectors after mounting the sensor assembly. Install the sensor assembly at the correct torque level yet replace it with a new one when there is evidence of dropping damage or defects or encountered during the installation process. During installation keep the SRS wiring away from pinching hazards but test the assembly stability by manual shaking after everything is secured. Reinstall the entire sequence of components which contains the FINISH PANEL, LOWER PANEL, NO.2 UNDER COVER, NO.1 LOWER PANEL, COWL SIDE TRIM LH, and FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH. Replacement of all SRS components should be made with new parts because any Air Bag sensor assembly from a collision should never be reused or fixed.
