2001 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2001 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The PS vane pump rotating torque measurement should commence with inspection for smooth pump rotation without strange sounds while the maximum limit remains at 0.25 Nm (2.5 kgf-cm, 2.2 inch lbs.). The power steering pulley must first stop rotating with Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) before you should detach the oil reservoir by unbolting its three nuts and removing the O-ring. The following items must be removed from the pressure port union and flow control valve and spring as well as the O-ring: then the rear housing and its combined 2 O-rings. The procedure requires removal of the wave washer followed by side plate and cam ring and vane plates and vane pump rotor while protecting plates from falling then using a screwdriver to extract the snap ring from the vane pump shaft before rotor extraction. To remove the front housing gasket and vane pump shaft with bearing, use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring and apply vinyl tape to the serrated shaft part before carefully pressing it out to preserve the oil seal lip. Examine the vane pump shaft to bushing oil clearance with micrometer and caliper gauge equipment and replace front housing and vane pump shaft if necessary due to any clearance beyond 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). The inspection of vane pump rotor components along with vane plates needs to ensure their respective heights maintain at minimum 8.6 mm (0.339 inch) and thickness reaches 1.397 mm (0.0550 inch) together with length requirements set at 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch). Additionally, measure the rotor groove and plate clearance which must stay under 0.035 mm (0.0014 inch). High-performance steering fluid should be used to check the flow control valve. The valve should fit smoothly into its position while vacuum testing with compressed air pressure between 392 and 490 kPa. When replacing the valve, use a new unit with matching inscribed markings to those on the original part (A, B, C, D, E, F). Use vernier calipers to measure the spring length which must be at least 33.2 mm (1.307 inch) before replacing it if outside specifications. Insert the new oil seal through Special Service Tool 09631-10030 before carefully extracting it while coating the lip with power steering fluid before installation with a 24 mm socket wrench in proper position. To replace a bearing users must extract it from the vane pump shaft with a snap ring expander while installing a new snap ring then coat the bearing with power steering fluid and pressing it into the shaft. To reassemble components first coat the mentioned parts with power steering fluid and use Special Service Tool: 09608-04031 to mount the vane pump shaft with bearing while checking for oil seal damage. Two new straight pins need installation before adding the cam ring with its inscribed mark facing outwards and the vane pump rotor and a new snap ring. Place the 10 vane plates in position starting with the curved portion showing outwards as you add the new front housing gasket followed by proper alignment of the side plate with straight pins. Adjust the wave washer to insert its protruding elements into the side plate slots then apply power steering fluid to brand new O-rings before installing them to the rear housing before tightening its 2 bolts to 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Place the spring next to the flow control valve with correct orientation before installing a new O-ring coated with power steering fluid to the union at 83 Nm torque (850 kgf-cm or 61 ft. lbs.). Secure the oil reservoir with a new O-ring that has been coated with power steering fluid using 3 bolts while torquing the front side bolt to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) yet torquing the rear side bolts to 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Finally you must stop the pulley from rotating with Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) and torque the nut to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) before measuring the PS vane pump rotating torque.
