2002 Toyota Tacoma Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2002 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The servicing process for the power steering pump begins with testing the PS vane pump for rotating torque while checking for smooth rotation with no abnormal noise and a maximum torque value of 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm and 2.4 inch lbs.). Stop the pulley from rotation by using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to remove the vane pump pulley set nut. The service begins with removing the oil reservoir through unfastening its 3 bolts and extracting the O-ring. Thoroughly remove the pressure port union as well as the flow control valve and spring together with their O-ring from the union. Unscrew two bolts to detach the bracket while the subsequent step involves removing the rear housing accompanied by its two O-rings. The service procedure then continues with wave washer removal followed by side plate and gasket removal alongside cam ring extraction of vane plates and vane pump rotor. Pay attention to avoid dropping any plates. First remove the vane pump shaft together with the two straight pins from the front housing. Standard and maximum vane pump shaft and bushing oil clearance should be between 0.03 - 0.05 mm (0.0012 - 0.0020 inch) according to inspection protocol performed with a micrometer and caliper gauge. The maximum allowed clearance remains at 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). The tallness and width of both the vane pump rotor and plates needs inspection against the required minimum requirements. The specifications include 8.6 mm for height (0.339 inch) and 1.397 mm for thickness (0.0550 inch) and a length of 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch). Check the rotor groove clearance against the plate by measuring 0.035 mm (0.0014 inch) as the maximum allowable value. The inspection of the flow control valve should include dipping it with power steering fluid then checking its descent into the valve hole and testing for leakage at compressed air pressures between 392 - 490 kPa (4 - 5 kgf/cm2, 57 - 71 psi). Use vernier calipers to measure the free spring length which should not be less than 33.2 mm (1.307 inch). The installation process demands use of Tools 09950-60010 (09951-00330) and 09950-70010 (09951-07100) for insertion of a new oil seal after it is pressed into place with power steering fluid and oil seal direction is correct. Reassembly demands power steering fluid coating of marked parts before putting the straight pins and ensuring correct placement of the vane pump shaft along with cam ring and rotor. The installation requires a new snap ring. Assemble the 10 plates with their round ends turned outward followed by a new gasket on the front housing and a side plate positioning correctly relative to the straight pins. Secure the wave washer by placing its protrusions into the side plate slots before applying power steering fluid to 2 new O-rings which should be installed to the rear housing followed by tightening 2 bolts at 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Begin by installing the spring first and then insert the flow control valve with the right orientation before sealing the pressure port union with a new O-ring which received coating from power steering fluid at 83 Nm (850 kgf-cm, 62 ft. lbs.). The bracket installation requires 2 bolts positioned at 43 Nm torque setting and will be followed by O-ring installation to the reservoir with power steering fluid coating before securing it with specified bolt torques: 13 Nm for the front side and 24 Nm for the rear side. finish the procedure by tightening the PS vane pump pulley nut through Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to stop pulley rotation while torqueing to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). A final test will measure the PS vane pump rotating torque.
