2002 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2002 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Before working on the power steering pump service start by testing the PS vane pump rotating torque for smooth behavior with no unusual noises and a torque limit of 0.28 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.). Start the service and repair of power steering by unbolt and removing the oil reservoir along with its O-ring. After disconnecting the pressure port union you must extract its flow control valve and spring together with the O-ring from inside the union. The rear housing requires removal of 2 bolts before proceeding to the 2 O-rings that need removal from the housing. Struggling wave washer and side plate release may require light tapping of the rear housing with a plastic hammer until both parts can be extracted easily. First properly eliminate the wave washer along with the side plate followed by the gasket. Remove the snap ring off the vane pump shaft by using a screwdriver before extracting the cam ring and subsequent removal of 10 vane plates and vane pump rotor with careful observation to prevent plate drop. After disconnecting the vane pump shaft with the vane pump pulley and 2 straight pins you can remove it from the front housing. To inspect the vane pump check the clearance between bushing and shaft with a micrometer and caliper gauge while maintaining standard clearance between 0.03 - 0.05 mm (0.0012 - 0.0020 inch) and maximum clearance below 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). If the clearance levels are exceeded replace the front housing together with vane pump shaft. You must inspect vane pump rotors and plates through a procedure including height and length checks as well as thickness assessments of the 10 plates and groove-clearance measurements between rotor pockets and plates. Keep height at minimum 8.6 mm (0.339 inch) while thickness should be a minimum of 1.397 mm (0.0550 inch) and length needs to be at least 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch) and this assessment requires the removal of any defective plate or rotor units. The flow control valve should get a power steering fluid coating before insertion into the valve hole and the inspection must verify its uncontaminated fall. Abdicate the valve only if replacement is needed with a matching marked valve (A, B, C, D, E, or F). Use vernier calipers to measure spring length because it should be at minimum 33.2 mm (1.307 inch). Replace the spring if it cannot reach this specification. Reinstall the oil seal by placing SST 09950-00010 (09951-00330) and 09950-70010 (09951-07100) tools on the new seal substance to properly install it via its correct direction. When assembling the system adequately coat every part bearing arrows with power steering fluid while installing the vane pump shaft which carries the pulley and tap two new straight pins into the front housing using a plastic hammer while guarding against pin damage. First position the cam ring by facing its inscribed mark outward before connecting it to straight pins and the rotor through which the rotor has its inscribed mark exteriorly and needs a new snap ring. Put in the 10 vane plates which have their round ends exposed in an outward direction while using a new gasket to seal the front housing correctly. After aligning the holes of the side plate with both straight pins, install the wave washer by inserting its protrusions into the side plate slots, and then power steering fluid-coated new O-rings before installing them into the rear housing while using 2 bolts torqued to 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). After facing the valve properly, place a fluid-coated O-ring on the pressure port union then install it by reaching 83 Nm torque (850 kgf-cm / 61 ft. lbs.). The maintenance process ends with installing a fresh O-ring that receives power steering fluid coating before its placement into the oil reservoir. Secure the reservoir using 3 bolts which need torque application to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) for the front side bolt and 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.) for the rear side bolts. Finally, check the PS vane pump rotating torque.
