2000 Toyota Tacoma Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2000 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Service and repair of the power steering pump starts with measuring the PS vane pump rotating torque before deciding when to proceed. Check that the pump rotates without noise and ensure the maximum torque stays below 0.25 Nm (2.5 kgf-cm, 2.2 inch lbs.). First stop the pulley rotation with Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to remove the vane pump pulley. Then remove the oil reservoir by taking off its 3 bolts and O-ring. Pull away the pressure port union and flow control valve and spring before taking off the rear housing together with its two O-rings. Severely handle the 10 plates while removing the wave washer side plate and cam ring along with vane plates and vane pump rotor from the assembly. Snap ring removal should happen from the vane pump shaft independently. To extract the vane pump shaft with bearing first remove the 2 straight pins from both the front housing and gasket then secure the snap ring removal with snap ring pliers before winding vinyl tape on the serrated shaft section before pressing it out while cautioning against oil seal lip damage. The micrometer and caliper gauge show the vane pump shaft bushing oil clearance during inspection; standard clearance must stay between 0.03-0.05 mm (0.0012-0.0020 inch) while maximum clearance should not reach 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). The front housing and vane pump shaft require replacement if these parameters are not met. The vane pump rotor inspection involves checking its height against 8.6 mm (0.339 inch) while thickness should measure at least 1.397 mm (0.0550 inch) and length needs to remain above 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch). At the same time inspect the rotor groove clearance against 0.035 mm (0.0014 inch) maximum. To inspect the flow control valve soak it with power steering fluid and confirm it easily slips into the valve hole under visual inspection while compressed air leak checks are performed (A, B, C, D, E, or F mark on both valves needs to match). Check the spring length measuring to 33.2 mm (1.307 inch) and get a new spring if the measurement is incorrect. Special Service Tool: 09631-10030 will guide you in replacing the oil seal with precautions to avoid damaging the front housing bushing and by applying 24 mm socket-driven pressure over the new oil seal lip which requires a drop of power steering fluid first. In order to replace the bearing from the vane pump shaft you should use a snap ring expander and coat the new bearing in power steering fluid before pressing it into the shaft. After fluid coating of the components proceed by using tool 09608-04031 to install the vane pump shaft with bearing before placing a fresh snap ring into the front housing. The first step involves hammering two straight pins into place before setting the cam ring with its marked side facing outwards then placing the rotor with its corresponding face directed outward and finishing by installing ten vanes with their round edges pointing away from the pump and a new gasket in position with proper care for the correct gasket direction. Before assembling the rear housing with its side plate and wave washer, coat two brand new O-rings with power steering fluid then tighten the two installation bolts to 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Safety before work should start by securing the valve in its correct orientation and applying power steering fluid to a new O-ring before tightening the union to 83 Nm (850 kgf-cm, 61 ft. lbs.). Secure the oil reservoir using three bolts which need to be torqued according to the next specifications. First, torquing the front side bolt to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) then torquing the rear side bolts to 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Install the vane pump pulley with Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to prevent pulley rotation until torquing the nut to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm,, 32 ft. lbs.), and measure the PS vane pump rotating torque again.
