2001 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair a brake caliper on 2001 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Begin the brake caliper service and repair operations by taking it apart. Pry off the 4 cylinder boot set rings and boots by using a screwdriver. Organize a wooden plate that will support the pistons while aligning it between the components then attach a pad on one edge. Compressed air should be used to remove pistons from the cylinder while avoiding finger contact in front of the pistons. Remove the 4 piston seals from the cylinder by using a screwdriver as an instrument. During examination check the pad lining thickness, which must be 11.5 mm (0.453 inch) as base and must not fall below 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). The procedural measurement of disc thickness must fall within 22.0 mm (0.866 inch) standard or extend to a minimum of 20.0 mm (0.787 inch). A dial indicator set at a 10 mm (0.39 inch) distance from the outside edge allows runout assessment on a brake disc that remains tightened with its hub nuts. Maximum permissible runout should not exceed 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). A "On-Car" brake lathe must be used to replace or grind outstanding discs until the front bearing play passes quality standards. Measurement can proceed afterward. To better the disc runout position remove the hub nuts while disc out then place the disc at a 1/6 turn position difference before re-torquing the hub nuts. Recheck the runout and record the precise disc installation position on the hub by rotating the disc 1/6 of turn through different installation positions until finding the optimal positioning with minimum runout value under the highest recorded runout threshold. The measurement process should be repeated using a new disc when the minimum runout reading surpasses the maximum specification. Lithium soap base glycol grease should be used for each indicated part during reassembly while performing the steps in the opposite order of disassembly.
