2001 Toyota Sienna Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the ball joint on 2001 Toyota Sienna?
A: Service of the ball joint requires a three-step process starting with steering knuckle and axle hub removal and ending with dust deflector removal through screwdriver and a following step of removing the cotter pin and nut. Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 functions as the necessary tool for extracting the lower ball joint. Take a torque wrench to TURN the nut continuously throughout 2 to 4 seconds then read the value during the fifth turn when the torque should be between 1.0 - 3.4 Nm (10 - 35 kgf-cm, 8.7 - 30 inch lbs.). The first step of installation involves placing and tightening the lower ball joint with a torque of 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 90 ft. lbs.) before you add the new cotter pin. Install the new dust deflector through the use of service tools 09316-60011 (09316-00011, 09316-00041), 09608-32010 and a hammer. Make sure you position the holes correctly for the ABS speed sensor between the deflector and knuckle. The procedure ends with front wheel alignment testing after reinstalling the steering knuckle with its attached axle hub and ABS speed sensor signal examination.
