2001 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear wheel bearing on 2001 Toyota RAV4?
A: The first step for repairing or servicing the rear wheel bearing starts with wheel removal supported by a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Start by removing the rear drive shaft along with the brake drum only for vehicles with 4WD. Using a dial indicator measure the bearing backlash and axle hub deviation where measurements need to be under 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) and 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) respectively. The axle hub should be replaced when either measurement reaches beyond defined maximum limits during the inspection process. While working on a 2WD system disconnect the ABS speed sensor connector before removing the four nuts on the rear axle hub with a torque setting of 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.). To replace the ABS speed sensor use a pin punch and hammer to pull out the two pins which allows the safe removal of two attachments by using Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020). Set the axle hub assembly inside a soft jaw vise before dropping or exposing it to powerful shocks. Replacement of the hub should happen right away under those circumstances. Pull out the ABS speed sensor using Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020) and 09950-00020 while avoiding foreign objects on the sensor rotor and maintaining straight sensor extraction to protect it. It is necessary to replace the axle hub assembly when the sensor rotor becomes damaged because contact between the axle hub surface and speed sensor needs to be protected from scratches. The correct method for new ABS speed sensor installation includes cleaning both surfaces before positioning the sensor with the connector at the bottom and using Special Service Tool: 09527-10011, 09710-04101, 09950-60020 (09951-00680) to press it in while avoiding direct hammer blows and aiming for a smooth straight press that excludes foreign objects. After the completion of installation proceed with checking the ABS speed sensor signal using the reverse order of the removal steps.
