2001 Toyota RAV4 Brake Caliper Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair a brake caliper on 2001 Toyota RAV4?
A: First remove the cylinder boot set ring and cylinder boot by using a screwdriver to start brake caliper service and repair. Start by placing cloth material between the caliper and piston and blow compressed air to extract the piston while keeping fingers away from the area. Originally use a screwdriver to remove the piston seal before extracting the two sliding pins from the torque plate and the two dust boots. Check pad lining thickness with a ruler to assess if replacement is needed according to the standards of 12.0 mm (0.472 inch) and minimum requirement of 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) or when severe uneven wear exists. You should use a micrometer to check the disc thickness. The normal disc length is set at 25.0 mm (0.984 inch) but if you detect anything under this level replace the disc immediately. A dial indicator at 10 mm (0.39 inch) from the outside edge should be used to check disc runout which must not exceed 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch); excessive runout requires bearing play and axle hub runout checks followed by necessary disc adjustment or grinding. To perform adjustment work first remove the knuckle torque plate and two bolts before uninstalling the hub nuts along with the disc. Follow with disc installation at 1/5 turn off its initial position on the hub and torque hub nuts to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Check the disc runout again while recording its value and disc placement orientation before performing adjustments until reaching a runout level of under 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch); choose this proper disc position for installation but replace the disc if runout minimums cannot be achieved. You should install the torque plate following bolt torquing to 106 Nm (1,090 kgf-cm, 78 ft. lbs.). During reassembly workers must first apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the parts where indicated before performing the opposite steps of disassembly.
