2000 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the wheel bearing on 2000 Toyota RAV4?
A: One should begin wheel bearing servicing and repair by removing the front wheel while tightening it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The measurement of bearing backlash and axle hub deviation begins by detaching both bolts and the brake caliper from the steering knuckle followed by secure suspension of the brake caliper along with disc removal. The backlash measurement of the bearing shaft direction should be done using a dial indicator and must not exceed 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch); replacement of the bearing becomes necessary if this limit is surpassed. A measurement of the hub surface outside the bolt must be taken that cannot exceed 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) before declaring either parts defective. Before removing the drive shaft lock nut, install the brake caliper and disc with proper torque of 107 Nm (1,090 kgf-cm, 79 ft. lbs.) then take out the pin and cap while applying the brakes to loose the nut at 216 Nm (2,200 kgf-cm, 159 ft. lbs.) followed by disc and caliper removal. To remove components from the ABS system in the vehicle first separate the 2 bolts which need a torque setting of 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.) for the ABS speed sensor while the wire harness requires a torque of 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). As a next step loosen the lower shock absorber nuts to 158 Nm (1,610 kgf-cm, 117 ft. lbs.) but do not detach them. The technician disconnects the tie rod end from the steering knuckle by removing the initial nut along with cotter pin while using Special Service Tool: 09610-20012 for the operation. To disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower arm start by removing the bolt and 2 nuts with application of torque at 127 Nm (1,300 kgf-cm, 94 ft. lbs.). Steering knuckle removal requires gentle handling of the oil seal and boot while ensuring safety of the ABS speed sensor rotor during installation which goes back the way it was removed. Perform an ABS speed sensor signal check along with measuring the front wheel alignment after product installation.
