Q: How to replace the Brake Pad Set on 2000 Toyota RAV4?
A: The front wheel must be removed first so the disc can be secured with hub nuts until pad replacement. Examine the pad lining thickness through the caliper inspection hole and change the pads whenever they fall below 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) of minimum thickness. Raise the caliper by detaching the flexible hose at the shock absorber bracket while keeping the bottom sliding pin loose to remove the mounting bolt before securely fixing the caliper without disconnecting the hose. Take out 2 brake pads and 4 anti-squeal shims together with 4 pad support plates from the braking system. Support plates that display acceptable condition can be reused except when showing signs of rust or dirt. First check the disc dimensions and runout before installing the four pad support plates. The installation order for new brake pads includes new anti-squeal shims; first apply disc brake grease on both sides of each inner anti-squeal shim and then install the shim to the inside pad before positioning the pad with its wear indicator plate facing upward before adding the outer pad yet ensuring that no oil or grease touches the friction surfaces. To move the piston forward draw some brake fluid from the reservoir and use a hammer handle or similar tool on the piston while carefully unscrewing the bleeder plug if needed. Screwing in the sliding pin first before tightening the installation bolt to 26 Nm (270 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs. will complete caliper installation. Then install the flexible hose bracket by tightening it to 33 Nm (340 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs. ). Restore the front wheel and verify that the fluid reaches the maximum mark on the reservoir.
