2000 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear speed sensor on 2000 Toyota RAV4?
A: Start service or repair of the rear speed sensor by disconnecting its connector after cushion and trim removal and then extracting the harness with grommet from its position. The repair of the rear speed sensor requires suspension arm parking brake cable removal followed by securing the sensor wire harness with its clamp bolts to body at 5.0 Nm and to suspension arm at 13 Nm. Torque specifications must be kept at 5.0 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.) for body and 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) for suspension arm. Participants should detach the speed sensor from the axle hub for 2WD vehicles except for the 4WD model in which the sensor needs extraction from the axle carrier and torque application at 8.0 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.). The disassembly of 2WD requires the use of Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 along with a pin punch and hammer to drive out the 2 pins while removing the 2 attachments but note that a new axle hub assembly is needed if the component drops or experiences shock. Special Service Tools 09520-00031 and 09950-00020 and two bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, Pitch: 1.5 mm) are required to remove the ABS speed sensor but the axle hub assembly needs replacement if sensor rotor damage occurs or any scratches form on the axle hub sealing surface or speed sensor. The axle hub and speed sensor installation requires Special Service Tool: 09213-58012 and a press to set a new speed sensor to the axle hub. This operation needs to be done without hammering the speed sensor and by inspecting for objects on the speed sensor detection area during the slow insertion process. The installation process should reverse all steps used during removal while afterward testing the speed sensor signal.
