2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Clutch Master Cylinder on 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: Service or repair of the Clutch Master Cylinder starts by taking out the luggage compartment trim box cover followed by disconnecting the clutch line from the clutch master cylinder using Special Service Tool: 09023-38200 and catching the fluid in a container. First use needle-nose pliers to detach the clip and pin before extracting the clutch master cylinder. The procedure ends by removing the 2 nuts to pull out the master cylinder. The reservoir separation process starts by hitting the slotted spring pin with a hammer and pin punch before removing the reservoir and its attached grommet and float along with the cap. Start by unwinding the lock nut to extract the clevis along with the lock nut followed by boot removal and use of snap ring pliers to remove the push rod and washer and snap ring. The last step involves removing the piston together with its spring component. Reassembly starts with applying lithium soap base glycol grease to component parts before placing the piston with spring inside the cylinder and mounting the push rod with washer into the piston and securing it with the snap ring. Start by putting the boot on the cylinder then wire the clevis with a lock nut before adding the reservoir containing float components and cap and new grommet and slotting the spring pin. The installation requires users to fasten the master cylinder with 2 nuts at 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque and fasten the push rod to the clutch pedal via a pin and pin clip. The clutch line needs attachment using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 then torquing to 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) or 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) with the special service tool through a torque wrench set for a 30 cm (11.81 inch) fulcrum length. The reservoir filling process occurs after bleeding the clutch system then adjusting the clutch pedal followed by leak inspection before reinstalling the luggage compartment trim box cover.
