2001 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Vacuum Brake Booster on 2001 Toyota Highlander?
A: The first task in replacing the Vacuum Brake Booster involves draining brake fluid and avoiding contact with painted surfaces. Start by disconnecting the wire harness clamps and ABS R/B when needed and then remove the front suspension brace sub-assembly upper center [53607A/98-99] and its 4 nuts after removing the air cleaner assembly with hose. The procedure starts with brake master less reservoir tank cylinder sub-assembly removal using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 [47207/98-81]. At the same time extract the brake master cylinder gasket [47275/98-81]. Brake actuator assemblies need removing using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 for vehicles without VSC while ABS & traction actuator assemblies should be taken out using the same tool for VSC-equipped models. The service technician should remove the instrument panel finish panel sub-assembly lower [55045/98-102] followed by the instrument panel insert sub-assembly lower left-hand [55406C/98-102] along with the brake pedal return spring [47101A/98-80] and push rod pin [47264A/98-80]. First disconnect all brake lines together with the vacuum hose from the brake booster assembly [44610/98-82] before removing its 4 clevis-mounted nuts. Put a new brake booster gasket [44785/98-82] into place following its installation of the brake booster assembly [44610/98-82]. The assembly installation requires connection of the clevis to the booster push rod while tightening 4 nuts to 13 Nm before attaching the brake lines with 2 nuts to 5.0 Nm and vacuum hose reconnection. Replace the push carrier rod [47264A/98-80] after fitting the brake pedal spring [47101A/98-80] then secure the instrument panel insert sub-assembly lower left-hand [55406C/98-102] and instrument panel finish panel sub-assembly lower [55045/98-102]. The brake actuator assembly [44510/98-85] should be installed using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 for vehicles without VSC while vehicles with VSC need their ABS & traction actuator assembly [44540/98-85]. After installing a brake master cylinder gasket [47275/98-81], you can install the brake master less reservoir tank cylinder sub-assembly [47207/98-81] using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 followed by installing the front suspension brace sub-assembly upper center [53607A/98-99] (torque: 80 Nm). Finish the procedure by reattaching wire harness clamps according to requirements and reinserting the air cleaner assembly with its hose and filling up the brake fluid reservoir before using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to bleed the master cylinder followed by bleeding the brake line and checking both the brake fluid level and brake fluid leakage and the brake pedal height.
