  • Q: How to remove and install the axle shaft on 2001 Toyota Echo?
    A: The first step to remove an axle shaft entails supporting the hub bearing by using Special Service Tool: 09608-16042 (09608-02021 or 09608-02041) when the vehicle weight needs support. Prior to disconnecting the drive shaft from the axle hub maintain the ABS speed sensor rotor serration free from damage. First drain all gear oil (M/T) or ATF (A/T) from the unit before unscrewing the drive shaft lock bolt using Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 then applying a hammer to unstake it all the time while braking the system. To disconnect the steering knuckle from the lower suspension arm use Special Service Tool: 09628-00011 (also known as 09628-00030, 09628-00040, 09628-00050) together with a nut removal followed by the clip extraction. Use Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 for disconnection when removing the tie rod end from the steering knuckle after seizing the cotter pin and unfastening its nut. The drive shaft separation from the axle hub requires a plastic hammer strike to avoid boot or ABS speed sensor rotor damage before drive shaft removal with Special Service Tools 09520-01010 and 09520-24010 (09520-32040) while protecting the dust cover and oil seal. Place a new snap ring on the inboard joint shaft then coat it with gear oil before hammering it inside using brass bar and ensure it faces downwards. Thoroughly check for 0.08 to 0.12 inches (2 to 3 mm) of drive shaft movement together with a test to confirm the shaft cannot be hand removed from its position. Secure the drive shaft to the axle hub paying attention to the boot and ABS speed sensor rotor followed by connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle with 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm) torque before installing a new cotter pin while possibly tightening the nut to an added degree. Install the steering knuckle to lower suspension arm by applying 98 Nm torque (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.) then put on a new clip followed by nut tightening if required. Use a torque wrench to tighten the new drive shaft lock nut to 216 Nm (2,200 kgf-cm; 159 ft. lbs.) while braking the vehicle. You should then stake the nut with a chisel followed by a hammer. The maintenance process ends by checking and filling the M/T gear oil or A/T automatic transmission fluid before installing the front wheel with 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque and conducting inspections on front wheel alignment and ABS speed sensor signal for vehicles equipped with this system.
