  • Q: How to remove and install the axle shaft on 2000 Toyota Echo?
    A: The process of removing the axle shaft requires one to initially support the hub bearing with Special Service Tool: 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041). This support is necessary only if the vehicle weight must be placed on the hub bearing for removal. The first task after disconnecting the drive shaft from the axle hub requires your attention to protect the ABS speed sensor rotor serration. Commence by taking out the front wheel after draining the transmission gear oil (M/T) or ATF (A/T) before you unstake the drive shaft lock nut with Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 combined with a hammer effect and brake application. To disconnect the steering knuckle from the lower suspension arm begin by removing the clip and the nut while using Special Service Tool: 09628-00011 (09628-00030, 09628-00040, 09628-00050). Start the front steering knuckle tie rod removal by disconnecting its cotter pin before unscrewing the nut then use Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 as a guide. Special Service Tools 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040) will allow you to remove the drive shaft once you separate it from the axle hub with a plastic hammer but you must avoid breaking either the boot or ABS speed sensor rotor. Put a new snap ring on the inboard joint shaft while coating it with gear oil and face its opening downward before hitting it into position with a brass bar. The drive shaft must have 0.08 to 0.12 inch axial movement while being impossible to take out with bare hands. Viewercaution must be taken when joining the drive shaft to the axle hub as well as when fastening the tie rod end to the steering knuckle with a torque of 49 Nm (500 kgf.cm, 36 ft. lbs.) because this involves the boot and ABS speed sensor rotor. Also install a new cotter pin but tighten the nut extra if needed. To proceed next you must join the steering knuckle to the lower suspension arm through application of 98 Nm (1,000 kgf.cm, 72 ft. lbs.) torque before fixing a new clip while tightening if required. Use a torque wrench to install the new drive shaft lock nut when brakes are engaged at 216 Nm (2,200 kgf.cm and a force of 159 ft. lbs). Perform staking by chiseling and hammering the nut. Once this is done, install the front wheel while applying 103 Nm (1,050 kgf.cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque and inspect front wheel alignment.
