    Q:
How to remove and install the axle shaft on Toyota Echo? Posted by Customer
    A:
Start the axle shaft removal process by using Special Service Tool 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041) for hub bearing support whenever vehicle weight needs support. The ABS speed sensor rotor serration needs proper attention because removal of the axle hub begins with drive shaft separation. The process to replace the axle shaft starts by removing the front wheel and draining gear oil (M/T) or ATF (A/T). The drive shaft lock nut can be unstaked using Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 while you apply brakes and hit it with a hammer. The next step requires removal of the clip followed by the nut to disconnect the steering knuckle from the lower suspension arm using Special Service Tool: 09628-00011 (09628-00030, 09628-00040, 09628-00050). Loosen the tie rod end from the steering knuckle by first breaking the cotter pin and nut before using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. You can detach the drive shaft from its position on the axle hub by using a plastic hammer in a way which protects both the boot and ABS speed sensor rotor. The drive shaft removal process requires Special Service Tool: 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040) to eliminate damage to dust cover and oil seal. Begin drive shaft installation by adding a new snap ring to the inboard joint shaft which should be coated with gear oil while its opening faces the downward direction. To install the drive shaft first tap the snap ring with a brass bar and a hammer while verifying that its axial play measures within 2 to 3 mm (0.08 to 0.12 inches) without the shaft being able to come off by hand. To connect the drive shaft with the axle hub maintain attention to preventing boot and ABS speed sensor rotor damage. The tie rod end requires a 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs) torque for installation while using a new cotter pin and optional additional nut tightening. Connect the lower suspension arm to the steering knuckle using a nut then tighten it to 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.) before adding a new clip followed by an additional tightening if necessary. Set the new drive shaft lock nut while maintaining brake pressure then torque it to 216 Nm along with chiseling and hammering it for staking purposes. The service technician will install the front wheel with 103 Nm torque and also do a front wheel alignment check. For ABS-equipped vehicles they must check the ABS speed sensor signal.
