2001 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2001 Toyota Celica?
A: The power steering pump servicing process begins by inspecting the pump for smooth rotation until eliminating all abnormal noises while conducting the pump torque measurement that should equal or less than 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.). Start your power steering pump service by removing the suction port union bolt with the O-ring next before moving to the pressure port union together with the flow control valve and spring components while pulling the O-ring from the pressure port union before continuing. First disconnect the oil pressure switch while replacing it if it suffers damage during extraction and then remove the rear housing through bolt disassembly for the rear bracket and subsequent removal of four bolts with their accompanying O-ring. The procedure now requires the removal of the cam ring and 10 vane plates together with the vane pump rotor and side plate with special care given to the vane plates to avoid dropping them while also extracting two O-rings from the side plate. Remove the vane pump shaft together with its attached vane pump pulley. A micrometer and caliper gauge should be used to measure vane pump shaft and bushing oil clearance during inspection. The accepted standard clearance range is 0.021 to 0.043 mm (0.0008 to 0.0017 inch) but should not exceed 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). Front housing and vane pump shaft replacement is needed if clearance values exceed limits. Inspect vane plate and vane pump rotor dimensions for height, thickness and length while evaluating the vane pump rotor groove clearance against vane plate according to inscribed marks and change parts as needed. The flow control valve needs to receive power steering fluid treatment before insertion into its valve hole while smooth movement testing should follow with compressed air leak detection for potential replacement. Perform a measurement of the spring length using vernier calipers then replace the spring if its free length measurement falls below 35.8 mm (1.409 inch). Installation of the new oil seal must begin with the careful screwdriver removal using vinyl tape and fluid-soaking the seal lip followed by the application of Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) for correct orientation. Reassembly begins with powering the vane pump shaft alongside the pulley followed by mounting the side plate that includes two o-rings coated with fluid into the correct position with the front housing. Position the cam ring with its inscribed mark on the outer surface and secure it by adding the vane pump rotor together with a new snap ring. Secure the rear housing with four bolts while aligning the straight pin and then tighten its screws to 22 Nm (220 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.) while also attaching the rear bracket at 44 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Proceed by tightening the oil pressure switch to 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) and installing the spring afterward along with the flow control valve into its proper orientation and the pressure port union secured with a new O-ring that received fluid coating at 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). Next, use a new O-ring to secure the suction port union at 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Testing of the PS vane pump rotating torque constitutes the final measurement step.
