2002 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2002 Toyota Celica?
A: A precise disassembly of the power steering pump must happen first to maintain the vise from excessive tightening. Check both the PS vane pump rotating torque value which must be at or below 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.) and the smooth operation without abnormal noise conditions. Start by removing the suction port union with its O-ring then proceed with removing the pressure port union while separating the flow control valve with its spring and all accompanying O-rings. The removal of the oil pressure switch requires special attention to prevent drops and then continue by removing the rear housing together with its O-ring. Drop every component carefully before removing the cam ring followed by 10 vane plates and vane pump rotor then moving to the side plate. Check for vane pump shaft to bushing oil clearance at 0.021 to 0.043 mm (0.0008 to 0.0017 inch) in a range where 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) is the maximum specification; the front housing and vane pump shaft need replacement if necessary. Check the dimensions of 10 vane plates to guarantee a height of 7.6 mm (0.299 inch) and thickness of 1.405 mm (0.0553 inch) and length of 11.993 mm (0.4722 inch). The clearance between vane plate and vane pump rotor groove needs to be under 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch) so replace components if needed according to the inscribed marks. The flow control valve needs inspection for smooth operation and leakage checks before replacing it with a suitable valve that matches the inscribed marks (A, B, C, D, E, or F). Testing shows that the free spring length must reach at least 35.8 mm (1.409 inch) before replacing it. Users can replace the oil seal by utilizing a screwdriver with vinyl tape on it to protect the bushing and dip the new seal lip into power steering fluid which they should insert with Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) while maintaining proper orientation. When reassembling the unit apply power steering fluid to specified components before installing the vane pump shaft together with its pulley then move to the side plate which requires new O-rings while maintaining correct plate alignment. Insert by placing the cam ring with its inscribed mark facing the outside and then add the vane pump rotor together with a new snap ring. Install the 10 vane plates facing outward with their round ends exposed before setting the rear housing covered by a new O-ring while keeping it straight against the pin and fastening it with 4 bolts at 22 Nm (220 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). The installation process begins with attaching the rear bracket using a bolt at 44 Nm torque (440 kgf-cm) and 32 ft-lbs) then adding the oil pressure switch with a torque of 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm or 15 ft-lbs) and completing the assembly with a spring and flow control valve and pressure port union while securing the flow control valve in its correct orientation at 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm or 51 ft-lbs). Finally, install the suction port union while using a new O-ring and torque it to 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) before reevaluating the PS vane pump rotating torque.
