2000 Toyota Celica Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2000 Toyota Celica?
A: The first step of servicing and repairing the power steering pump requires measuring the PS vane pump rotating torque to identify smooth operation and normal noise levels up to a maximum of 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf.cm, 2.4 inch lbs.). Begin service and repair of the power steering pump by disconnecting the union at the suction port through bolt removal of O-ring replacement before performing the same process at the pressure port union then flow control valve and spring removal with pressure port O-ring extraction. Disassemble the oil pressure switch while replacing it when damaged and detach the rear housing by removing its bolt and two parts followed by removal of the four bolts that secure the housing and its O-ring. Move the cam ring together with 10 vane plates and vane pump rotor from the assembly and take out the side plate. Protect the vane plates from falling while removing two O-rings from the side plate. The shaft-to-bushing oil clearance measurement requires a micrometer and caliper gauge to detect if the clearance falls within the 0.021 - 0.043 mm (0.0008 - 0.0017 inch) standard range or if it surpasses the maximum limit of 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch); the front housing and vane pump shaft need replacement in case the clearance exceeds the maximum. Take ten vane plates measurements for height, thickness and length to confirm they meet or exceed 7.6 mm (0.299 inch) height and 1.405 mm (0.0553 inch) thickness and 11.993 mm (0.4722 inch) length. Replace vane plates or adjust the vane pump rotor groove according to the feeler gauge reading which should not exceed 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch). Verify that each component has its inscribed mark matching the cam ring. The inspection of the flow control valve requires power steering fluid application followed by a test for smooth insertion into the valve hole. The test checks for leakage by blowing compressed air which must remain inside the valve as you replace it with the correct valve that matches the inscribed mark. Vernier calipers should measure the spring's free length which must not be less than 35.8 mm (1.409 inch) before it gets replaced. Use a screwdriver wrapped in vinyl tape to protect the bushing while replacing the oil seal and apply power steering fluid to the new oil seal lip before installing it correctly with Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100). Reassembly requires power steering fluid coating all specified parts before installing the vane pump shaft with pulley and the side plate which contains two new O-rings in proper position. Place the cam ring with its inscribed mark directed toward the outside part of the assembly before adding the vane pump rotor together with a new snap ring. Proceed with installing the 10 vane plates by facing their round ends outward before installing the rear housing with a new O-ring along with four bolt installation at 22 Nm (220 kgf.cm, 16 ft. lbs.) while aligning the straight pin with the dents followed by the rear bracket installation at 44 Nm (440 kgf.cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Install the oil pressure switch at 21 Nm (210 kgf.cm, 15 ft. lbs.) before setting the flow control valve in the correct orientation along with the pressure port union under a torque of 69 Nm (700 kgf.cm, 51 ft. lbs.). Place the suction port union equipped with a fresh O-ring and tighten it to 12 Nm (120 kgf.cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Afterward measure the PS vane pump rotating torque.
