2001 Toyota Avalon Starter Motor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2001 Toyota Avalon?
A: Service of the starter motor starts by clearing away the dust protector and moving onto the field frame and armature after disconnecting the lead wire from the magnetic switch terminal (Torque: 5.9 N.m) while removing the two through bolts with a Torque setting of 5.9 N.m. After retrieving the field frame with armature maintenance begins by matching it to the magnetic switch while you take out the existing O-ring and put in a fresh one for later reinstallation. The procedure follows with starter housing and clutch assembly removal after loosening two screws (Torque: 5.9 N.m) to extract starter housing and clutch assembly and return spring and idler gear and bearing. Unscrew the two screws holding the brush holder while you also remove the end cover (using a torque of 1.5 N.m), proceed to take out the O-ring before disconnecting the four brushes from the brush holder but maintain the positive lead wires from contact with ground. High-temperature grease should be applied to the bearings and springs as well as steel ball and gears when building the EV system back together. The replacement of the clutch assembly requires tools to disassemble the starter housing and clutch assembly with a vice-mounted brass bar for pinion gear depression and stop collar tapping and snap ring prying before stop collar and pinion gear and compression spring removal. After setting the compression spring and clutch shaft into the starter clutch proceed with performing the correct installation of spring retainer, compression spring and pinion gear and stop collar while maintaining fitment of the snap ring. Special Service Tool 09280-46011 must be used to uninstall front and rear bearings and Special Service Tool 09820-00030 should be utilized for bearing installation. The process to replace magnetic switch terminal kit parts contains these steps: first remove all three bolts along with end cover and gasket and plunger, then perform contact plate wear measurement (limit is 0.9 mm), and finally decide if part replacement is necessary. The terminal nuts need to be loosened with Special Service Tool: 09810-38140, then Terminal C and Terminal 30 parts need to be removed for new terminal kit installation while maintaining appropriate insulator and wave washer alignment. A wooden block should be used to apply 981 N force on the contact plate before tightening the nuts to 17 N.m using Special Service Tool: 09810-38140. Clean the contact surfaces of the remaining parts before reinstalling the plunger, new gasket, end cover and three bolts which require a torque of 2.5 N.m.
