2000 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the wheel bearing on 2000 Toyota Tundra?
A: Start the wheel bearing service and repair by removing the front wheel together with the grease cap through screwdriver and hammer application. The drive shaft requires separation in 4WD models when you remove the lock cap and cotter pin and apply the brakes to remove the lock nut. Service and repair of wheel bearings starts with disconnecting the ABS speed sensor and wire harness clamp from the steering knuckle through the removal of its two retaining bolts. The brake caliper and disc removal process begins with untalking the bolt and brake line clamp from the steering knuckle before unfastening the 2 bolts that secure the brake caliper and disc while also supporting the brake caliper until finish Start the process by removing the shock absorber and disconnect the lower ball joint through removing its 4 bolts. The removal process for the steering knuckle requires workers to begin by taking out the cotter pin and loosening the nut before they use Special Service Tool: 09950-40011 (09951-04010, 09952-04010, 09553-04020, 09554-04010, 09955-04031, 09958-04011) to disconnect the steering knuckle before finishing with the nut and steering knuckle removal while maintaining care of the oil seal and drive shaft boot for 4WD models. A plastic hammer should be used when the drive shaft requires persistently high force for disconnection. To install the drive shaft the axle hub needs to accept this shaft while 4WD models require a nut temporary fastening although caution must be taken to protect the oil seal and drive shaft boot from damage. Next attach the steering knuckle to the upper suspension arm and secure the nut with a new cotter pin by setting the nut further to a maximum angle of 60 degrees when the holes of the cotter pin do not match properly. Torque this nut to 105 Nm (1,100 kgf-cm, 77 ft. lbs.). The 4 shock absorber bolts should be torqued to 80 Nm while connecting the ball joint to steer the knuckle. The brake caliper assembly requires installation of the brake disc together with the caliper and 2 bolt torques at 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 90 ft. lbs.). Next attach the steering knuckle bracket with a bolt torque set at 28 Nm (285 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). Install ABS speed sensor and wire harness clamp to the steering knuckle by using two bolts which should be torqued to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 ft. lbs.). When installing the drive shaft lock nut on 4WD models it is crucial to maintain brake pressure then tighten the nut to 235 Nm (2,400 kgf-cm, 173 ft. lbs.). Additional rotation of the nut is needed to reach a 60 degrees position for proper installation. To complete the installation process install the grease cap while tightening the front wheel to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.), repeat depressing the brake pedal several times then inspect the front wheel alignment before checking the ABS speed sensor signal.
