2001 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the wheel bearing on 2001 Toyota Tundra?
A: Service and repair of wheel bearing starts with taking out the grease cap from 2WD models after mounting the axle hub on a soft jaw vise while using a screwdriver. The oil seal inside needs removal according to the same procedure for 4WD model vehicles. Special Service Tool: 09318-12010 allows personnel to remove the lock nut after chisel-and-hammer loosening of the staked part for 2WD vehicles. The technician must avoid damaging the speed sensor rotor serration during this procedure. Retrieve the axle hub from the steering knuckle after removing four bolts and moving the dust cover then utilize Special Service Tool: 09710-30021 (09710-03051), 09950-40011 (09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04031, 09957-04010, 09958-04011). Clear the dust cover while removing the bearing spacer along with the ABS speed sensor rotor for vehicles with ABS and the spacer without ABS. Use a screwdriver to remove the outside oil seal before taking out the bearing from the steering knuckle through snap ring removal with snap ring pliers when using Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00810), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) with a press. Install a fresh bearing by using the combination of Special Service Tool: 09527-17011, 09950-60020 (09951-00910) as well as a press before you insert a new snap ring with snap ring pliers. A new oil seal (outside) requires installation with Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09527-17011 and a plastic hammer while applying MP grease to the oil seal lip. The dust cover requires installation back onto the steering knuckle using 4 bolts which should be torqued to 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). Use Special Service Tool: 09649-17010 and a press to attach the axle hub. The 2WD requires new lock nut installation with Special Service Tool: 09318-12010 and torquing to 274 Nm (2,800 kgf-cm, 203 ft. lbs.) followed by chiseling stake with a hammer and chisel. The installation of the bearing spacer requires Special Service Tools: 09950-60010 (09951-00650), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) and a press. Subsequently, 4WD requires the insertion of a new oil seal (inside) using Special Service Tool: 09527-17011 and a plastic hammer which must be used to strike the tool evenly while applying MP grease to the lip.
