2000 Toyota RAV4 A/C Clutch Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the A/C Clutch on 2000 Toyota RAV4?
A: Service and repair processes of the compressor clutch start with running the engine at idle speed under A/C operation for 10 minutes before engine stoppage and battery negative terminal cable disconnection. Tear down the refrigeration system while discharging its refrigerant and remove the discharge and suction hoses by taking out 2 bolts but terminate the open fittings right away with caps to shield from moisture or dirt intrusions. Proceed to remove the drive belt and the compressor by disconnecting the connector then removing the 2 bolts and nut followed by using a torx socket (E 10) to remove the stud bolt. Reconnect the connector after installing the compressor by following the steps of torquing its stud bolt to 47 Nm (479 kg.cm, 34 ft.lb) then placing the nut and 2 bolts at respective torques of 27 Nm (280 kg.cm, 20 ft.lb) for the nut and 37 Nm (375 kg.cm, 27 ft.lb) for the bolts. The installation process includes setting the drive belt tension followed by connecting discharge and suction hoses through two bolts which need tightening to 10 Nm (100 kg.cm, 7 ft.lb) while immediately performing installation steps after removing caps by applying compressor oil to fresh O-rings. After connecting the negative cable to the battery resume the refrigeration system evacuation and charge the refrigeration system with 700 plus or minus 50 g (24.69 plus or minus 1.76 oz.) of the correct refrigerant. To complete the procedure use a gas leak detector for refrigerant checks and verify fitting torque at leak-prone points before conducting a complete air conditioning operation check.
