2000 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The front axle hub removal process starts with steering knuckle service and repair tasks which require disconnection of the oil seal together with the gasket and dust cover through the removal of four bolts. You must disconnect the ABS speed sensor together with the wire harness by unfastening 3 bolts. Service the tie rod end from the steering knuckle arm by first removing its nut and cotter pin before using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. Follow the same steps to disconnect the lower suspension arm from the steering knuckle by using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 while removing the cotter pin and nut. After removing the cotter pin and nut from the steering knuckle you must install the bottom suspension arm nut while using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 before detaching it from the upper suspension arm to allow subsequent removal of steering knuckle from the lower suspension arm. To disassemble the steering knuckle arm required two bolt removal and then you should use a screwdriver and hammer to remove the oil seal followed by the bearing and bushing installation with a brass instrument assisted by a hammer. Assembly requires the installation of new bearing and bushing using tools 09950-60010 (09951-00540) and 09950-70010 with 09951-07100 press while using synthetic oil and lithium soap base chassis grease NLGI No. 1 on the bushing inner surface. A new oil seal installation requires Special Service Tools: 09950-60020 (09951-00910), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a press which should be applied MP grease to the lip surface. The bolt threads and steering knuckle require cleaning with toluene or trichloroethylene before you apply Part No. 08833-00070 THREE BOND 1324 or equivalent sealant to the bolts. Then install the steering knuckle arm with the 2 bolts using proper torque of 147 Nm (1,500 kgf-cm, 108 ft. lbs.). The installation process includes applying synthetic oil and lithium soap base chassis grease of NLGI No. 1 to the drive shaft. A jack must support the lower suspension arm before attaching the steering knuckle while being careful to avoid oil seal damage. Place the temporary nut on the lower suspension arm then elevate it with a jack. After that, install the steering knuckle onto the upper suspension arm with an appropriate nut which should be torqued to 110 Nm (1,125 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.). Finish the installation with a new cotter pin while slightly over-tightening the nut to a 60 degrees angle when necessary. Use 159 Nm torque to fasten the lower suspension arm nut and secure it with a new cotter pin. Fasten the tie rod end to the steering knuckle through a nut which needs to be tightened with 122 Nm torque force and followed by installing a new cotter pin and additional tightening of the nut up to 60 degrees if required. The installation process ends with mounting the front axle hub after securing the new gasket while torqueing 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) and the oil seal with its 4 bolts that require 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.), then attaching the dust cover.
