2001 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Start the steering knuckle service process by taking out the front axle hub then remove the oil seal along with gasket and dust cover through the 4 bolts extraction. The ABS speed sensor along with its wire harness requires removal after disconnecting 3 bolts. The process of removing the tie rod end from the steering knuckle arm involves taking out the cotter pin and nut before using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 for disconnection. The procedure for the lower suspension arm requires the same special service tool to perform the task. The correct order to extract the steering knuckle requires removing the steering knuckle and nut as well as the cotter pin followed by a temporary nut installation on the lower suspension arm and then utilizing Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 for separation between the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle before removing the nut and steering knuckle from the lower suspension arm. To separate the steering knuckle arm, remove its two bolts first then use a screwdriver and hammer to extract the oil seal followed by the bearing and bushing while using a brass tool with a hammer. A new bearing and bushing should be installed with the assistance of Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00540), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) before pressing them into place while applying synthetic oil and lithium soap base chassis grease NLGI No. 1 to the bushing interior. Install the new oil seal using the Special Service Tools: 09950-60020 (09951-00910), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) with the press together with a press coat of MP grease on the lip. The repair includes cleaning the bolts and steering knuckle threads with toluene or trichloroethylene followed by applying sealant (Part No. 08833-00070 or THREE BOND 1324 equivalent) on the bolt threads before installing the steering knuckle arm with the 2 bolts using a torque of 147 Nm (1,500 kgf-cm, 108 ft. lbs.). To install the drive shaft users need to apply synthetic oil and lithium soap base chassis grease NLGI No. 1 while supporting the lower suspension arm with a jack and connecting the steering knuckle to it while avoiding damaging the oil seal during the process. Using a temporary nut on the lower suspension arm, lift the assembly with a jack before installing the steering knuckle to the upper suspension arm with a nut while applying 110 Nm (1,125 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.) torque and adding a new cotter pin as necessary by increasing nut tightenness by 60 degrees. Attach a new cotter pin to the lower suspension arm nut before tightening it to 159 Nm (1,625 kgf-cm, 117 ft lbs). The tie rod end interface with the steering knuckle requires a nut installation followed by torquing to 122 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 91 ft. lbs.) before installing the new cotter pin combined with additional nut torque to 60 degrees when the holes are misaligned. The final steps involve securing the ABS speed sensor wire harness followed by torquing its 3 bolts to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) and 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) then 28 Nm (290 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.) before installing the dust cover and new gasket while using the 4 bolts with 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). Finish by installing the front axle hub.
