2000 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the front Brake Pad Set on 2000 Toyota Camry?
A: The first step for front brake pad replacement requires front wheel removal followed by disc mounting with hub nuts. Check pad lining thickness through the caliper inspection hole until you find pad replacement is necessary when maximum thickness reaches 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). The caliper lift requires bolt and flexible hose removal from the bracket; 5S-FE engine customers should loosen the installation bolt by holding their sliding pin then removing it and bottom side installation bolt removal is required for the 1MZ-FE engine. Securely hang up the caliper by maintaining attachment to its flexible hose. For the 5S-FE engine you must first remove its two anti-squeal springs before removing the two brake pads together with their four anti-squeal shims. The pad wear indicator plate and 2 pad support plates must be removed from the 1MZ-FE engine while you need to remove 4 pad support plates when working on the 5S-FE engine. The anti-squeal springs together with support plates can be reused when they remain undamaged, uncracked, and unworn and remain free from rust or dirt. The disc runout and thickness should be checked before installing the new pads with two or four pad support plates. The anti-squeal shims and wear indicator plates must be replaced alongside the pads. When installing the pad wear indicator plate to the inner pad of the 1MZ-FE engine, apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims before installing 2 anti-squeal shims to each pad. Position the inner pad upward by setting its wear indicator plate then put the outer pad into place without any lubricants on the braking surfaces. Two anti-squeal springs need installation on the CAFE engine. Using a hammer handle push the piston into the caliper after drawing a small amount of fluid from the reservoir. The process may require releasing the bleeder plug to avoid resistance. The CAFE engine requires slider pin maintenance when installing the caliper bolt with 34 Nm torque while the 1MZ-FE engine demands 34 Nm torque. Also install the flexible hose and bracket bolt before completing the torquing to 29 Nm levels for both engines. End the brake line installation by placing the front wheel then twisting until reaching 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque while also pressing the brake pedal multiple times before confirming fluid at the max line.
