    Q:
How to overhaul the pressure plate on Toyota Camry? Posted by Customer
    A:
The first step of pressure plate overhaul requires manual transaxle assembly removal before proceeding with clutch release fork boot extraction and clutch release bearing assembly and clutch release fork sub-assembly removal. You need to take out both the release bearing hub clip together with the release fork support but make sure the manual transaxle assembly retains the release fork support. You should remove the clutch cover assembly by first aligning the matchmarks between the cover assembly and flywheel sub-assembly then loosening the bolts one turn at a time until spring tension is released before pulling off the cover assembly without dropping the clutch disc assembly. Manipulate the clutch disc assembly while maintaining clearness of both lining components and pressure plate elements as well as the flywheel sub-assembly face from oil and foreign contaminants. Utilize vernier calipers to measure the depth of clutch disc assembly rivet heads which must be below 0.3 mm (0.012 inch) depth or if necessary the rivets need replacement. Insert the clutch disc assembly into the transaxle assembly correctly before measuring its runout with a dial indicator because excessive runout should not exceed 0.8 mm (0.031 inch). The clutch cover assembly must be inspected using vernier calipers to check diaphragm spring wear levels because excessive depth of 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) and width of 6.0 mm (0.236 inch) will require replacement of the assembly. A dial indicator must be used to measure the flywheel sub-assembly runout for a maximum of 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) before replacing if needed. The clutch release bearing assembly should be evaluated through manual movement under applied axial force and replaced whenever necessary. Special Service Tool: 09301-00220 should be inserted into the clutch disc assembly followed by the flywheel sub-assembly and both parts must be correctly oriented. Use the specified order to tighten the clutch cover assembly bolts with the flywheel sub-assembly bolts to a torque of 19.1 Nm while ensuring even tightening and performing a disc centering check. Use the dial indicator on Special Service Tool: 09333-00013 to measure the diaphragm spring tip alignment of the clutch cover assembly. Maintain maximum non-alignment under 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) and adjust using the special service tool if necessary. Fasten first the release fork support onto the manual transaxle assembly at 47.1 Nm (480 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.) and proceed to install the release bearing hub clip to its assembly. A piece of release hub grease (Part No. 08887-01806 using RELEASE HUB GREASE or equivalent) should be applied to where the release fork touches the release bearing assembly and then the release fork must be installed onto the release bearing assembly components. The input shaft spline requires clutch spline grease (Part No. 08887-01706, CLUTCH SPLINE GREASE or equivalent) before the installation of the release fork with release bearing assembly to the manual transaxle assembly to ensure freedom of motion when completed. The end of this procedure includes manual transaxle assembly installation together with clutch release fork boot installation.
