Coolant Temperature Sensor in Toyota Prius cars is an important component that helps in regulating the temperature of the coolant which in turn affects the functionality of the engine. This sensor constantly measures the temperature of the coolant, which is reflects the engine's performance most of the time. Depending on the years of production, the Toyota Prius models may have different Coolant Temperature Sensors though they will be specialized to perform the same task. Such distinctions in sensors have enabled efficient and reliable way of measuring and regulating the temperature of the coolant hence enhancing the general performance and lifespan of the vehicle.

Toyota Prius Coolant Temperature Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the coolant temperature sensor on Toyota Prius?
    A:
Start the engine coolant temperature sensor replacement process by first taking steps for safety and then removing the radiator support opening cover together with engine under covers (LH and RH) and draining engine coolant and HV coolant fluids. Begin the sensor replacement by removing rear floor board No.2 and No.3 along with the deck floor box rear and cutting off the engine wire No.3 (battery negative terminal connection). Begin the service by taking out the service plug grip in addition to windshield wiper arm cover and front wiper arms (LH and RH). You need to remove also hood to cowl top seal and cowl top ventilator louvers (LH and RH). After removing the windshield wiper link assembly you should take out the cowl top panel sub assembly outer front along with the inverter cover. The technician must confirm the W/converter inverter assembly voltage level is at 0 V while performing the following disconnection sequence: inverter cooling hoses No.1, No.2, and No.6 along with removing circuit breaker sensor No.1 and disconnecting frame wire No.2. Use a deep socket wrench 19 mm to remove the sensor while disconnecting its connector. Pull out the W/converter inverter assembly and the engine coolant temperature sensor with their gasket. Connect the sensor after installing its new gasket and temperature sensor with a torque stay at 20 Nm (200 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf). Install the W/converter inverter assembly then link it to frame wire No.2 and circuit breaker sensor No.1 before connecting inverter cooling hoses in the order No.6 No.1 and No.2. Continue the process by reattaching the inverter cover followed by cowl top panel sub assembly outer front, windshield wiper link assembly, service plug grip and engine wire No.3 (battery negative terminal). Last, the technician will reinstall the cowl top ventilator louvers (both RH and LH) together with the hood to cowl top seal and front wiper arms (LH and RH) and windshield wiper arm cover. Following this, the rear floor boards No.3 and No.2 as well as the deck floor box rear and engine under covers (RH and LH) are installed. The technician ends the procedure by reinstalling the radiator support opening cover. Perform the final step of the process by starting the power window control system operation.
  • Q: How to install the Coolant Temperature Sensor on Toyota Prius?
    A:
A 19 mm deep socket wrench should be used to install both the sensor and new gasket before using it to torque the connections to 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbf) while connecting the sensor connector. You must install the inverter with converter as your next step. The next step includes wiring the cable to the negative terminal. Add engine coolant and HV coolant to necessary specifications. Both engine coolant and inverter systems must be checked for any leaking fluid levels. The next step involves installing the engine under cover RH followed by engine under cover LH before placing the radiator support opening cover. The process ends with initialization since you need to execute system initialization following negative (-) battery terminal cable reconnection and disconnection.
