Toyota MR2 Spyder Throttle Body Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the throttle body on Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: Start the throttle body service process by emptying the engine coolant then taking out the suspension upper brace. Remove the VSV for EVAP hose and disconnect this hose together with the air cleaner hose for removal. Service and repair operations on the throttle body begin with disconnecting the accelerator cable followed by removing the throttle body component after disconnection of Throttle Position Sensor connector along with throttle control motor connector and PCV hose removal along with separation of two water bypass hoses. The two bolts securing the throttle body bracket should be removed first then proceed to disconnect the two bolts, two nuts and throttle body before removing the two gaskets from the Intake Manifold. Reinstate the accelerator position sensor connector while setting the throttle body into place using two bolts and two nuts which need to be torqued to 30 N.m (305 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf). Also install two new gaskets on the intake manifold. The installation includes bolting the throttle body bracket to its position using 2 bolts at 49 N.m (500 kgf.cm, 36 ft.lbf) while reopening two water bypass hoses and PCV hose and control motor connector and throttle position sensor connector. The technician should first fill the engine coolant into the radiator before reconnecting the accelerator cable and reinstalling the VSV for the EVAP with the air cleaner hose and the VSV for the EVAP hose and the suspension upper brace. The replacement process should include minimizing impacts on throttle position sensor and accelerator pedal position sensor yet check for foreign matter absence. The throttle position sensor replacement requires removal of its set screws followed by sensor installation where the throttle valve opening must be set at an angle of 4 degrees while the sensor needs to be turned 15 degrees to the left from the provided reference position. To adjust the sensor connect it then verify the throttle valve opening percentage using TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to achieve standard value of 15.2 ± 0.8 % before screw tightening to 2.0 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 18 in.lbf). Verify the throttle valve opening measurement remains between 10 - 14 percent as per the standard specifications. Set the two screws then paint them while setting the ignition OFF followed by deconnecting the tester. To set the accelerator position sensor in its place you must first remove its four bolts then secure it with the same bolts torqued to 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf) while inspecting the ACCEL POS #1 (VPA) voltage which should be within standard range of 0.3 - 0.9 V. The inspection of system operation must be completed after throttle body installation.
