The Toyota Echo Starter transforms electrical energy in the battery to mechanical energy that cranks the engine. The combustion starts off in a smooth manner. The Starter is mounted with a solenoid to the battery using a wire. Inside the solenoid is a rotating armature that is encircled with field coils or permanent magnets. As the ignition key is switched to START, the solenoid lights up the motor and shifts the drive gear into the flywheel or flexplate ring gear. An overrunning clutch draws the gear back as soon as the engine fires. Within the case, there are brushes that contact the commutator on the front of the armature shaft and Starter drive at the back. The armature is rotated by the electromagnetic force. In those designs where there is gear reduction, the motion is passed on to the drive by reduction gears. The Starter is compact in the Echo engine bay. A Toyota Echo control circuit has a Starter relay, a safety switch that disengages when an automatic transmission is not in neutral or, in manual models, the clutch is released. This ensures that the Toyota Echo engines only start under safe conditions of Toyota vehicles.

Toyota Echo Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Starter, replace the brushes, and replace the center bearing on Toyota Echo?
    A:
The Starter removal process starts with disconnecting the starter under cover and its connector and wire before taking off the securing bolts which hold the starter in place. The installation process involves positioning the starter correctly and fastening it with the 2 bolts before reuniting the starter wire and securing the nut while connecting the starter connector for complete under cover replacement. Only the two positive (+) side (York side) brushes are replaceable but the negative (-) side brush needs to replace in the brush holder within the body structure. Cut the brush lead wire at the terminal side and shave the welded mark to 5.0 mm width and 1.6 mm thickness before pressing the supply brush plate onto the welded terminal lead wire. Solder the pressed area and finish it with a 7.0 mm width and 3.3 mm thickness measurement to avoid inside lead wire or field penetration. You must use Special Service Tool: 09221-25026 (09221-0090) either to press out an old center bearing or for installing a new center bearing at its correct position.
  • Q: How to service and repair the Starter on Toyota Echo?
    A:
The Starter repair process starts with removing all its components for service purposes. Starting by disconnecting the lead wire from the terminal after removing the two housing bolts securing the starter switch allows you to lift the switch part to free the plunger hook from the drive lever. Begin by removing the two through bolts to pull out both field frame and armature in sequence while extracting the O-ring from the field frame. Brush holder maintenance begins with removing two screws and their matching end cover and then taking out the O-ring followed by disconnecting the brush holder through screwdriver-guided manipulations of the spring before extracting the four brushes. Extract the armature from the field frame before removing the drive lever and the combination of starter clutch with Shock Absorber from the starter housing. Start by removing the plate together with three gears and one plate washer from the planetary gears. The planetary carrier shaft starts by pressing the stop collar forward until the snap ring starts to release. Then remove the stop collar together with the starter clutch from the shaft. First remove the planetary carrier shaft's snap ring as well as plate washer using snap ring pliers before pulling out the shaft while aligning the hollow of the internal gear with the shock absorber protrusion. The reassembly procedure requires high temperature-resistant grease for bearing and sliding part lubrication. Insert and rotate the internal gear first before installing the planetary carrier shaft. Apply grease to both components before inserting the internal gear against the shock absorber. Place the planetary carrier shaft before attaching it with a plate washer along with the snap ring. The next stage involves placing the starter clutch on its shaft after applying grease to both bushing and spline components and using a snap ring for attachment. The planetary gears require grease application before both the flange pins and plate installation. After proper alignment the plate can be easily placed. Install the drive lever and starter clutch with shock absorber while applying grease to the drive lever including proper alignment to the shock absorber. Position the armature into the field frame followed by installing the brush holder through brush connection and by using a new O-ring and end cover that requires 1.5 Nm (15 kg.cm, 13 in.lb) torque. Place the field frame and armature assembly onto the shock absorber by mixing a new O-ring with it then fasten it through two bolts torqued to 5.9 Nm (60 kg.cm, 52 in.lb). The magnetic switch installation process involves attaching the plunger to the drive lever using two nuts at 8.3 Nm torque (85 kg.cm, 73 in.lb) while connecting the lead wire to the terminal and torquing its nut at 9.8 Nm (100 kg.cm, 87 in.lb).
