Toyota Echo Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear left shock absorber assembly with REAS on Toyota Echo?
    A:
The first step includes removing the coil spring with the rear shock absorber as well as all supplementary parts. Follow the step-by-step disassembly and assembly procedures to achieve correct shock absorber installation with functional results.
  • Q: How to service the rear shock absorber on Toyota Echo?
    A:
Wait before servicing the rear shock absorber until you get rid of the rear wheels alongside the package tray trim that includes the high-mounted stop light and 2 clips as well as the rear seat that needs removal through its cushion and seatback but only using the two bolts for split type seats. Start by removing the door scuff plate and door opening trim after which you should dismantle the quarter trim starting with the bolt followed by the rear seat outer belt. The next step is to remove the roof side inner garnish while disconnecting the front seat outer belt shoulder anchor for 2-door models and then take off the room partition board. Jacks should support both sides of the rear axle before the shock absorber removal by holding the piston rod while uninstalling the 2 nuts and washer along with upper suspension support, nut, washer, and lower suspension support from the piston rod. Disassembly of the coil spring begins by disconnecting the set nut and washer from the opposite shock absorber lower side and gradually lowering the jacks to extract the coil spring with both upper and lower insulators. The shock absorber inspection should involve stretching and compressing the rod to detect unusual resistance or sounds; a new shock absorber should be installed if problems are present. Finally dispose the shock absorber by extending its rod fully before you drill a hole in the cylinder to allow gas release while maintaining safe distance from flying debris. Instillation starts with the upper insulator connecting to the end of the coil spring before installing both components to the axle beam. .Attach the shock absorbers to both sides of the axle beam using washers followed by nuts before final torquing at 49 Nm after the suspension reaches a stable position. Start by installing the lower suspension support to the shock absorber before adding the upper suspension support with washer to the body framework at the correct position where the piston rod should extend 15 - 18 mm (0.591 - 0.709 inch) beyond the lower nut before torquing the upper nut to 25 Nm (250 kgf.cm, 18 ft. lbs.). After removing the jacks, install the room partition board along with the roof side inner garnish (using a 41 Nm torque for front seat outer belt shoulder anchor on 2-door models) and quarter trim (with rear seat outer belt torqued to 41 Nm) and door opening trim and door scuff plate. The procedure ends by reinstalling the rear seat with its split type seatback side hinge torqued at 37 Nm (380 kgf.cm, 27 ft. lbs.). Additionally, install the package tray trim and rear wheels while torquing them to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf.cm, 76 ft. lbs.).
