Q: How to service and repair the steering wheel on Toyota 4Runner?
A:
The maintenance process starts by taking out the steering wheel pad together with the steering wheel and upper and lower column covers and spiral cable. Install the spiral cable first followed by upper and lower column covers and then the steering wheel before putting on the steering wheel pad.
Q: How to address a steering wheel that is off center on Toyota 4Runner?
A:
You should start fixing an off-center steering wheel by applying masking tape at the top center of the wheel and steering column upper cover. Steer the vehicle straight ahead while keeping a constant speed of 35 mph (56 km/h) until reaching 100 meters using the steering wheel. Apply the steering wheel to its direct position by using the steering column upper surface and wheel surface together with the SRS Air Bag guideline and steering spoke. Take the measurement from one line of masking tape to the next line to find the steering angle by using the conversion ratio 1 mm equals approximately 1 degrees. For adjustment purposes you should draw lines displaying visibility on both RH and LH tie rod and rack ends before recording their screw-to-end distance measurements. Adjust the steering by detaching the boot clips from the rack boots then loosening the lock nuts before turning the rack ends in contrasting directions through equivalent amounts according to the desired setting. Recall that each rack end turn by 360 degrees generates 1.5 mm (0.059 in.) of rack travel which produces 12 degrees of angles. Adjust the left and right lock nuts to 55 Nm (560 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.) while checking that the length difference between rack end screws and tie rod ends stays within 1.5 mm (0.059 inch) before installing boot clips.
