Scion xB Starter provides the mechanical power that causes the engine crankshaft to rotate in order to initiate combustion. It is a unit that transforms battery electricity into rotation using a xB Starter motor inside a case. The power is fed out of a thick cable to an external solenoid. When the ignition switch is set to START, the solenoid closes the circuit, pushing the drive gear forward and turning on the motor. Coils of fields or permanent magnets are placed around a spinning armature that supports the brushes and a commutator in the front and a drive mechanism in the back. The armature is rotated by the electromagnetic action that spins the Scion xB Starter drive gear, which meshes with the flywheel or flexplate ring gear. An overrunning clutch disengages the drive after the engine fires, protecting the Starter from overspeed. The control circuit has safety devices that stop cranking when the transmission is in gear, using a neutral safety switch on automatics or a clutch switch on manuals. This design is also fitted to Scion cars so that all owners can enjoy cranking on with a gear reduction Starter when the Scion xB key is switched on, keeping the engine ready.

Scion xB Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Starter on Scion xB?
    A:
Starting the Starter removal process requires disconnecting the negative battery terminal cable first. Start by disconnecting the mass air flow meter connector along with loosening the hose clamp, unlocking the air cleaner assembly clamp before you can take off the cap. Next step is to remove the air cleaner filter element sub-assembly from inside the air cleaner case sub-assembly. Detach the wire harness clamp before removing 3 bolts from the air cleaner case sub-assembly. The manual transaxle maintenance requires technician to remove the terminal 50 connector from starter assembly followed by unfastening the wire harness nut from terminal 30 and then removing 3 bolts to separate clutch flexible hose bracket and starter assembly. Start by disconnecting terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly before removing the nut to separate the wire harness from terminal 30. Remove the 2 bolts and starter assembly as the next step.
  • Q: How to install the Starter on Scion xB?
    A:
The starter installation starts with manual transaxle attachment by fastening the starter assembly and clutch flexible hose bracket through 3 bolts where Bolt A needs 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf) torque and Bolt B requires 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf) torque. Begin by connecting the wire harness to terminal 30 then install the nut before applying the terminal cap at 9.8 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 87 in-lbf) and finally connect the terminal 50 connector to the starter assembly. Locate the starter assembly to the automatic transaxle using 2 bolts which should be torqued up to 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf) after which the wire harness should connect to terminal 30 with the provided nut and terminal cap at 9.8 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 87 in-lbf) and finally link the terminal 50 connector. Fitting the air cleaner case sub-assembly requires three bolts tightened to 7.0 Nm (71 kgf-cm, 62 in-lbf). Then secure the wire harness clamp to the sub-assembly. After installing the mass air flow meter connector connect the air cleaner filter element sub-assembly and air cleaner cap sub-assembly to the air cleaner case sub-assembly. The sub-assemblies need to be securely locked while tightening the hose clamp before the terminal connection. You should attach the cable to the negative battery terminal while applying 5.4 Nm of torque (55 kgf-cm or 47 in-lbf).
