2010 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the camshaft on 2010 Scion xB?
A: Starting the camshaft removal for 2AZ-FE engines begins with the removal of the rear engine under cover RH and then proceeds to the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly and ignition coil assembly and spark plug. Take off the cylinder head cover sub-assembly by first unfastening its ventilation hoses and subsequent removal of its bolts and wire harness brackets and nuts and 8 bolts. Place the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression stance by lining up the crankshaft pulley groove with "0" on the timing chain cover while verifying the sprocket and timing gear marks face the corresponding ones on bearing caps No. 1 and No. 2; if necessary, rotate the crankshaft pulley once to achieve proper alignment. Apply a sign to mark the chain when it matches the timing marks. Start by dissociating the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly followed by using a wrench to stabilize the No. 2 camshaft while slackening the timing set bolt from the camshaft timing gear or sprocket. The procedure to extract the No. 2 camshaft involves gradually loosening and removing ten bearing cap bolts following a designated sequence, followed by removing five bearing caps and three components which are the camshaft timing sprocket set bolt and the sprocket with its timing chain. When removing the camshaft proceed by doing it the same way as before: uniformly loosen and remove the 10 bearing cap bolts then detach the 5 bearing caps and finally remove the camshaft and camshaft timing gear when holding the timing chain. Secure the timing chain using a string to avoid items from entering the timing chain cover. The process for removing the camshaft timing gear assembly involves clamping the camshaft in a vise to stop rotation and then applying 150 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2, 22 psi) air pressure at the advance side port after covering all oil ports with vinyl tape except that one. Apply cloth coverings to all paths before proceeding with the operation to prevent oil from spilling out. The final step requires removing the single flange bolt on the camshaft timing gear assembly while leaving all other 4 bolts intact. Additionally, if the camshaft timing gear needs reuse, release the straight pin lock during installation.
