2010 Scion xB Camshaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to install the camshaft timing gear assembly and camshafts on 2010 Scion xB?
A: The camshaft timing gear assembly installation method requires alignment of the camshaft timing gear with the straight pin and key groove off-set. Turn the camshaft timing gear while applying gentle pressure to the camshaft to allow the pin to enter the groove while avoiding rotation to the retard angle position. Verify that the gear fringe has proper clearance with the camshaft before torquing the flange bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft-lbf). To validate camshaft timing gear movement check that it reaches the retard position and locks for maximum retardation. Prior to attaching the bearing caps into the cylinder head inspect the front marks and numbers before applying a thin layer of engine oil to the journal portion and installing the timing chain onto the camshaft timing gear with proper alignment of the paint mark. Apply engine oil to the threads and under the bearing cap bolt heads before tightening cap bolts that follow a specified sequence where No. 1 bearing requires 30 Nm (301 kgf-cm, 22 ft-lbf) and No. 3 bearing needs 9.0 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 80 in-lbf). The journal portion of the No. 2 camshaft requires engine oil before aligning the chain paint mark with the camshaft timing sprocket timing mark. Next, temporarily torque the camshaft timing sprocket set bolt followed by checking the chain mark leading numbers then adding the bearing caps. The technician must coat bearing cap bolts with engine oil before applying uniform torque at 30 Nm (301 kgf-cm) and 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm) to No. 2 and No. 3 bearing caps respectively. Users should apply 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft-lbf) torque while using a wrench to hold the camshaft before tightening the sprocket bolt but should avoid damaging the valve lifter. After tightening the bolt users should verify that the chain paint marks are aligned with camshaft timing gear and sprocket timing marks as well as the crankshaft pulley groove matches the "0" mark on the timing mark chain cover. To install the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly begin by releasing the ratchet pawl then push in the plunger and hook it to the pin while installing two nuts and a new gasket with torque specifications at 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 in-lbf). Maintain the ratchet pawl setting if the plunger releases from the hook. Use counterclockwise action on the crankshaft to remove the plunger knock pin from its hook position before using clockwise movement to verify plunger extension. You must set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression position and conduct valve clearance checks before covering it with 8 bolts, 2 nuts and seal packing (Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent) applied at specified locations. Tighten Bolt A to 11 Nm (112 kgf-cm, 8 ft-lbf), Bolt B to 14 Nm (143 kgf-cm, 10 ft-lbf) and the nut to 11 Nm (112 kgf-cm, 8 ft-lbf). Fitting both engine wires requires 8.4 Nm (86 kgf-cm, 74 in-lbf) torque and then connecting ventilation hoses to the cylinder head cover. The service procedure ends with installing the spark plug and ignition coil assembly followed by leak detection of engine oil and an inspection of ignition timing then removing the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly before installing the rear engine under cover RH.
