2010 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and replace the axle shaft assembly on 2010 Scion tC?
A: The first step for axle shaft assembly replacement requires draining automatic transaxle fluid along with manual transaxle oil according to vehicle specifications. Start the process by removing both the front wheel and engine under cover followed by the front axle hub nut elimination using Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 along with a hammer for unstaking purposes until the nut is fully loose to protect drive shaft screw integrity. You should remove the front axle hub nut when you brake the vehicle. The front stabilizer link assembly requires the removal of its nut yet the ball joint could turn so employ a 6 mm hexagon wrench to stabilize the stud. Untighten the bolt that separates the front speed sensor wire and flexible hose from the shock absorber then disconnect the front speed sensor bolt from the steering knuckle while minimally touching or allowing new additives to enter. The tie rod end sub-assembly can be disconnected through removal of the cotter pin and nut followed by the use of Special Service Tool: 09628-00011 to remove the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Disassemble the front No. 1 suspension lower arm sub-assembly by detaching its bolt and two nuts until it separates from the lower ball joint. Before disassembly of the front axle assembly operators must mark the drive shaft and axle hub to create removable matchmarks but they must use plastic-faced hammers to separate these components without damaging the boot and speed sensor rotor or pushing out the drive shaft excessively from the axle assembly. The technicians must use the listed Special Service Tools to extract the front drive shaft assembly LH without harming the transaxle case oil seal alongside the inboard joint boot and drive shaft dust cover while keeping the assembly from falling loose. To remove the front drive shaft assembly RH you must first remove the two bolts before extracting the drive shaft together with the drive shaft bearing case and then extract it from the transaxle while taking care to avoid inboard joint boot and drive shaft dust cover damage and preventing the assembly from falling. To protect the hub bearing from damage apply vehicle weight through Special Service Tool: 09608-16042 while using 09608-02021 and 09608-02041 as needed.
