• Q: How to replace the oil filter on 2009 Toyota RAV4?

  A: Engines should be serviced by first protecting skin from coming into contact with oil because it will result in dryness and irritation and by following proper handling procedures for waste oil and filters. A proper start involves unseating the engine oil via oil filler cap removal while opening the oil pan drain plug and gasket which allows oil to run into a suitable container. Connect the 15 mm hose pipe to the cap assembly before removing the drain plug of the oil filter followed by attaching the hose to the cap. The drain plug installation requires you to reinstall the O-ring after removing it from the plug. Remove oil from the filter while disconnecting the pipe followed by removing the O-ring. The oil filter cap removal should be performed using Special Service Tool: 09228-06501 because it allows the cap extraction without separating the oil filter bracket clip. Extract the oil filter element and O-ring under hand supervision to prevent O-ring damage. Before installing the cap begin by cleaning its interior and threads and O-ring groove before applying engine oil to a new O-ring which needs to be placed on the cap. Start by putting in the new filter element into the cap while you clean the engine surface for installation and apply oil to the O-ring for temporary installation of the cap. Use Special Service Tool: 09228-06501 and tighten the oil filter cap to 25 Nm (255 kgf-cm, 18 ft-lbf). Also check that the O-ring remains undistorted while tightening the cap. Oil down a fresh drain plug O-ring before putting it on the oil filter cap along with tightening the drain plug to 13 Nm (127 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf) while checking that the O-ring remains unpinched. Install the drain plug of the oil pan with a 40 Nm torque while using a new gasket (408 kgf-cm, 30 ft-lbf) and add oil following the standard grade and capacity. Replace the oil filler cap afterward. Complete the procedure by starting the engine while inspecting all serviced regions for oil leaks.
