2009 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the water pump on 2009 Toyota Avalon?
A: One needs to start the 2GR-FE water pump removal process by draining engine coolant before taking off both the front wheel RH and engine under cover RH. Start by taking off the V-bank cover sub-assembly and following it with removal of engine moving control rod along with engine mounting control bracket and engine mounting bracket front No.1 LH. Empty the V belt connecting the fan to the generator while separating the outlet hose from the radiator. Take off the water inlet housing by disassembling the water hose with two bolts and removing the nut while also removing the water inlet housing gasket No.1, water outlet pipe O-ring. Special Service Tools 09213-70020 and 09213-70011 can remove the crankshaft pulley while Special Service Tools 09960-10010, 09962-01000, and 09963-00700 hold the water pump pulley beforetaking out its four bolts to allow removal. The technician eliminates the No.2 idler pulley sub-assembly by successively removing bolt, No. 2 idler pulley cover plate and idler pulley cover plate, No. 2 idler pulley sub-assembly from both front and rear positions while recording the plate diameters at 33.6 mm (1.32 in.) for the idler pulley cover plate and 37.8 mm (1.49 in.) for the No.2 idler pulley cover plate. Care must be exercised when removing the idler pulley bolt because it uses a left-handed thread system. Cautious approach is required during the bolt loosening process because this idler pulley operates with left-hand thread. To finish the procedure the technician must split the vane pump assembly while extracting the water pump assembly by first removing all 16 bolts along with the water pump assembly and water pump gasket.
